I have bought a copy of this program.
Has anyone else installed it in Win98SE?
Any problems?
Is it effective?
Any advice appreciated

Never used it but it looks quite similar to many freebies.

One thing to ensure (with any registry cleaner) is that "in any run" it saves it's fixes in reverse order to that found.
It will then restore them "last found first" if you should need to.

Many registry cleaners get this wrong and I've proven that you can thereby loose keys. I can bore you with reasoning/details if you really want me to.

I am violently opposed to 'so called' Registry fixers. Well not 'violently', but I don't trust them.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

My $0.02!

I use RegSeeker because it's thorough, FREE & it probably would have helped accomplished your goal, saving you the $20.00 spent on Registry Repair Pro.

... sorry, in my #1, it is Values that Registry Cleaner undo's can loose (not Keys). It goes like this:

For safe restore (undo) the .reg file should save in reverse order to that found - ie last first.

In a given run, if a cleaner first takes out a Value and then a Key, if the Key is put back after the value it overwrites the lot, so the Value then goes missing.

I've conculsively proved this on several cleaners by disabling the file webcheck.dll then letting registry cleaners remove, then restore the entries. The Value never returns!

I'm no fan of RegSeeker but it is one of the few that gets this aspect right. So at least their undo works properly.

Sorry Sabertooth, we overlapped (I was not knocking your post).

Having said that, on mine RegSeeker messed up a key memoriser program and the IE Control Panel/Add-Remove entry (both repeatable). It also said that a whole stack of well known file extensions were invalid (even though files existed).

I do use registry cleaners but would say that you have to watch them like hawkes. Even if the undo works properly you get so many you have one heck of a job to find the right one when you notice a problem at some later date.

Thanks for the advice. Seems like most of you are anti as far as this class of progs go.
I bought it because the program did score good marks in a UK comp mag any my system seems to fall-over too frequently.
Anway, thanks for the interest.

In my case I'm not exactly anti, in fact I do use registry cleaners. I do think though that you have to watch what they are up to because they can get things wrong.

A common failing is that if a file is qualified in the registry (such as setup.exe/s) it will not find a file with that name although setup.exe is there. The trouble is it might remove the entry.

I once lost Disk Copy due to registry cleaners too (just remembered). All this was over a considerable number of years so it is still a fairly good score - ie they mostly got it right. Just take care that's all I'm saying, and a knowledge of the registry is useful.
