Hello there,

I've downloaded Registry Mechanic and have an updated version of McAfee Virus scan on my PC (MCAfee came with it), but RM always seems to detect the McAfee stuff as errors. Do these two prgrams conflict? And can anyone recommend a must-have antivirus program out there to protect against trojans and also get rid of the ones I think I already have? I've been using Zone Alarm, and in fact have tried to download their antivirus stuff, am not too worried about the fact that it has to automatically uninstall the McAfee in order to do it - but when I try this, ZA tells me it can't! any suggestions? thanks in advance.

McAfee often falsely reports "infections." It even reports DELINDEX as being infected.

Try AVG - free!

thanks Renaissance Man,

i'd heard of AVG before and last week actually tried to download and install it. What happened was that at re-startup of the PC, I would come to the start page with all my icons, like usual, and then the PC itself would seem to "jam up." I don't know if it was about compatibility of programs or what, but as my Pop-up stopper window popped up, and also SpyHunter and then ZA, I think these altogether jammed with the opening of AVG, resulting in a total freeze. Eventually, I was able to uninstall AVG so as to get around that problem - but still would lije to try AVG - what should i do to make sure the "jamming" problem doesn't happen again?
thanks in advance,

If I were you, I would use pccillin trend micro internet security.

I wouldn't recommend this if i didn't use it, and furthermore, it has protected my computer from viruses ever since.

I have been using McAfee on this machine for just about 5 years now without a single infection (knock on wood). I have my attitudes about McAfee as a company being too commercialized and not Customer oriented but that is another story.
I particularly dislike how they want to hit you up for big bucks too often to keep up with their upgrades.

But, their most recent version, version 8, is really their best effort to date (I started with version 4). It is much lighter on the system. I use Script Sentry to block scripts from running and found I did not like McAfee's script blocker as it is redundent so I disengaged it.
(So much for the commercial)

In order to uninstall McAfee you must first right click it's system tray icon and select Exit.
Then go to Start, Run, msconfig, Startup tab and remove the check marks next to all of it's entries.
None of it can be running or active in order to uninstall it.

Restart the PC.
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall McAfee. Hopefully you are not using their Safe&Sound product becuase that in itself is another project in itself to remove.

Restart the PC again to make sure all is well.
I also disconnect from the internet for the entire process just to be safe.

I assume you have already downloaded teh AVG installer.

Before installing it you might want to exit out of ZA and your Popup stopper until it is installed.

When done restart the PC to re-enable the other programs.

Reconnect to the internet and then update AVG. You will have to create a rule with ZA to allow AVG to connect to the internet.

Then run a full scan with AVG.

HTH

I have not used Registry Mechanic so I don't know of it's conflicts.

They do have a Support page. You could contact Technical support or Customer Service support on that page.

I would try Avast! free home edition, but make sure you uninstall McAffee before using it.

If your car is running good...don't give it a tune-up....same goes for your PC....and when in doubt...try a system restore to the point when the PC ran good...it WORKS!

hehe,
Just my 2 pennies to contribute. As far as virus protection, just read through the virus bulletin at their web site. <a/> I have also just read about Symantec earning their 17th VB100% award, the article, <a/>, was not to bad. Other than I couldn't figure out what the "Recording Breaking" was relating to. It would have to be a 'personal best record' for Symantec. I say that, because for a REAL record, scan through the VB web page and find the info and results on an anti virus program called "Nod32". Last time I checked, (a few months ago), it is THE ONLY ONE that has never missed earning this renawned award, SINCE LIKE 1998!! It has like 24 or 25 wins under it's belt, and is rather resonable to purchase. I personally use the AVG program. True, some people might say one gets what they pay for, but as long as I keep the definition files up to date, it has never missed a single infected file on my computer. Both, while downloading files, or recieving email through outlook express, which it integrates with for email protection. I don't mind paying for a program, don't get me wrong, it is the not liking of paying for the "yearly" membership for getting updated definition files, that aren't guaranteed to protect me in the first place. That's just my opinion. And on the opinion, I feel that the best virus prevention/protection is education and knowledge. Ya know, we've all prolly heard these before. Things like , don't open files from people ya don't know. I always look at the name of the file extension if I get a mail with attachment. If it is .exe, .pif, .zip(w/password in email text for the zipped file), .com, .bat, and prolly some other's that I haven't had the 'luxury' of encountering yet.

I personally use Registry MEDIC, (not mechanic), and another program called system mechanic, along with ad-aware. I always check for updates PRIOR to running the programs, so I'm also using up-to-date definition and reference files. I found that just one registry cleaner is not enough!!! Another will find stuff left behind that one didn't pick up and delete.

Catch ya'll later.

If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

WHOA, sorry bout the bad tags in that last post!! Funny how one's gotta have Everything JUST right!!! LOL

The Symantec letter link : Http://www.virusbtn.com

As far as Avast! compared to AVG, well, it's a personal preference. In the last testing, Avast! failed and AVG (ver=7) passed, (testing on xp systems) http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/tests.xml?200406

Hopefully these links are working correctly! ;)
