Thought I would try out Registry Mechanic (Evaluation Version) It tells me 1. Configuration files (1 error) 2. Program shotcuts (2 errors) But can't be fixed with evaluation version. Is there a free program that is good that will fix this? I've got RegSeeker but that doesn't do anything for this. Thanks for your help.

Yes, it's built into Win98. It's called SCANREG. Click Start / Shutdown / restart in MS_DOS mode and at the prompt type Sanreg/fix.

Boot to DOS mode (Command prompt only) by pressing F8 then type "scanreg/fix", your older system.dat and user.dat will changes with a new ones.

Scanreg /fix is well worth a go (it often fixes problems you didn't know you had).
I'm not so convinced it will fix incorrect shortcuts though. They are not too important and maybe you will stumble across them sometime when you try to open something and it doesn't.
Most likely they have been left behind when uninstalling some program or other. Think back about what you have uninstalled - it may give you a clue.
There are programs that do this sort of search, such as Norton System Works (big thing that has problems in certain areas).
There used to be something called FirstAid so it's worth searching Google. Maybe someone else has some up to date thoughts on this aspect.Derek

Your errors sound trivial and not worth worrying about. If scanreg doesn't find a problem then I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree entirely with Spamtrap as far as the shortcuts are concerned. Its simply a case of whether you want to bother - they won't cause any trouble.
As for the configuration files you could type sfc in the Run box and run the scan. Don't let it fix anything but just post back with the names of any files it queries. Sfc has been known to get things wrong and I've got it's errors on file.
Derek
