Registry Editor
Cannot import C:\Windows\sp.reg:Error opening the file. There may be a disc or file system error.

I get this message every time I boot up my computer. It pops up before my computer is even finished booting up. How can this be fixed? I have a Dell OptiPlex GX1 and I am running windows 95.

Use notepad to look at c:\autoexec.bat. If you see a line like the one below, delete it.

c:\windows\sp.reg

Here's what's going on. Everytime you start the computer an entry in the registry is trying to load and run the sp.reg file located in C:\Windows.

Not sure exactly what the sp.reg file is but it will make changes to the registry everytime you start the computer.

This type of tactic is normally used by homepage hickers, adware, spyware ect....

Now the reason you are getting the error message is that the registry is calling to load the sp.reg file and cannot because it no longer exist in C:\Windows.

This could be for several different reasons.
You manually deleted the file.
A program such as Ad-Aware, Spybot or your antivirus program deleted the file and left the registry entry behind.

Go to Start and Run.
Type regedit and click OK.
Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right pane for an entry with sp.reg and highlight it.

Select File at the top and Export.

Now delete the entry in the registry with sp.reg.

Restart the computer and you should no longer receive the error message.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Check This:
You get a bonus here, I have included a Speed Tweek Reg. File that will speed up your internet connection,
Click on link or "Right" mouse click on each link and "Save Target As...." to the desk top.
Download sp.reg to the desktop and double click on it, and click Ok (That will add the fields to the Registry)
Download sp.dll and put it in the windows folder. ( This file will keep them there, from being hi-jacked )

I found this at Speed Tweek & Make Newnan.cc your home!

I am unsure but this maybe the root of your problems.
The "LockReg" LockReg from the same page is a good idea. It 'locks' down your Homepage settings in an attempt to stop 'HomePage HiJackings'

Mesich,
Thanks so much for the help. Your instructions were perfect. It worked like a charm. No more error messages! Thanks so much for the help. The folks at Dell were telling me that I had to uninstall and reinstall my windows program to fix it. I'm glad I found out about this site and asked for help before doing that. Thanks again.

Hi HR,

You are very welcome and I am glad I could be of help.

Thank you for responding back.

We exported the registry entry so if you had problems we could import it back. I would run the computer for a couple of days and then delete the backed up entry.

Sometimes the techs at places like Dell have their hands tied and are not allowed to tell the customer to edit things like the registry, or at least that is what I would like to think. :)

Glad you are error free.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Mesich,

I am trying to follow your instructions with Windows ME for fixing this problem; however, when I go to Registry (because there is no File) > Export Registry File..., I don't know what to enter as "File name". Thanks.

Hi Kristen,

Did you find the sp.reg entry in the registry located here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To Mesich:

Hello! I followed your instructions to get rid of the aggravating sp.reg but when I reboot it miraculously reappears in HKEY_.......\RUN. Any idea how to track down from whence it originates?

Thanks,

face
