if i re-install win98 or 2000, if i copy my regedit.exe file to D drive, then recopy it back over the newly installed one, will it work so that i don't have to re-istall everything?

Regedit is simply the program used to access the registry. I beleive what you want are the registry files themselfes which are user.dat and system.dat.

However there is way more to it then that. When programs are installed they add dll and other files in the Windows directory so you would need to know which files and copy all those as well.

As Roger summed it up, Nope.

You would not want to do that because the registry entries for the new install would not be included. If you install over your current versions I believe it will maintain all of your current settings anyways.
