I want to reformatt my comp and save My Documents on the D Drive. That way I don't have to waste CD-Rs burning everything I have. However, if I do reformat, will that reformat/clean out my D Drive also? I don't want to lose My Documents. Any answers?

When you run the format command, as long as you tell it to format the C drive only, it WONT format the D Drive.

the only way the D Drive will format is if you tell it to.

Copy and Paste the My Documents folder to D drive and if you format C drive, the bootable one,you can install the OS of your choice.Format will always be done on one drive at a time.At diskette dos prompt:
format C:
Good luck.

Umm well, I've never reformatted before so, when I do, is there something specific I have to do to tell it not to reformat the D Drive? or will it just do the C Drive alone automatically?

format c:

type that at the DOS prompt

You cannot format the D drive unless you type "format d:" at the DOS prompt.

If you really want to be safe, take the
cover off and unplug the D drive, meaning
take off the wide cable. Do not do this
until you shut the pc off and unplug from
the power source.

Is your D: a physical device, i.e. another hard drive?

If yes, then after copying your files to it, do as others have said...boot to the command line and type format c: then hit enter.
Doing so will wipe your c: drive clean and you can install the OS of your choosing. Your files on d: won't be touched in the process and will still be there after installing your new OS. However, if your currently using win95 and you install 98 or later I beleive you won't be able to see the files on d: b/c they're are using a different file system. Not completely sure on this.

If no, i.e. d: is a logical drive, I'm not 100% positive, but I believe the results are the same.

Good luck.

win 95 and 98 an ME all uses the FAT32 Table, so no matter what you do you files will still be there.

Hi y'all

If your D: is a partition, extended drive or logical drive,on your C: it may very well be deleted..If your D: is seperate physical drive, disconnect it as a precauton, before you format the C:
What is your setup as far as how many partions, on the C:? And is the D: a seperate physical drive?
Need more answers..

beansoup no matter what you do to c: drive as far as formatting ,installing windows drive d will not be affected.formmating a partition is what it means, and that it.the only way that d could be affected is he tells
it to format d.CLESSAP do as others have said
copy and paste the stuff you want to save to d drive.then befor you do anything make sure that you have a bootdisk for windows m.e.(make sure that it works)then go for the format and when it done just reboot pc with the bootdisk and at the cd prompt just type setup.and you should be on your way.

Hi y'all,

zeb,
That's what I thought until I sent my PC in to techie land for repair..(Under warentee) I had two partitions C: & D:..
D: contained all my personal storage...I had one drive when I got it back...C: ( Lost all my personal storage,on D:.)I have formated and installed windows on a two partition drive, myself, and didn't lose the D: I quess it depends on how you format the drive..:-)

Peace

O/T

zeb, I agree..They messed up..Cost me $18 in phone calls and never got an answer as to what they did...As I said, I formated partitioned H/D's myself more than once, and never lost the D: drive..But like I also said, it's the way you format.Wrong move and the D: is history...
Did we ever establish, if ClessAP, has a partition drive or two H/D's?

Peace

Hi y'all

**i think my D Drive is a partition**

Open a MSDOS window..
At the C:windows, type in fdisk/status
That will tell you if the C: drive has a partition...
If it shows Disk 1 and Disk 2, then you have two H/D's

Peace

ClessAP
once again I'll try to explain.if you want to format your c drive do so,it will not in anyway affect your d Drive..
now we got this out of the way!!
#1 you said at one point you have windows 98
and then windows me.your last statement its back to windows me you want to install.ok do this go www.bootdisk.com and download the windows me custom bootdisk, then make the bootdisk, after you make the bootdisk then just boot pc with the disk just to be sure that it works.when it booting make sure that it finds your cd-rom and install the driver for it.if everthing go good and you sure the bootdisk works, then you can boot pc using the bootdisk and this time go to the a: prompth and type this!!
A:\ format c:
there a space between format and c:
then hit enter.
this will format only C: drive. after the format then reboot pc with the bootdisk.when it done booting go to the assign cd-rom drive
it may assign E: for your cd-rom.(we will use E drive for now) type this
E:\ (hit enter)
E:\setup (hit enter)
the installment of windows should start at this point.
leave a e-mail address and I may be able to help you more if needed and when you get pc up and running re post it here so others in need may learn. zeb
