Hello
I'm ready to pull out my hair here!
My dad gave us his old computer, it had win 95 on it. I decided today that I would reformat it and install win 98. Well, I got as far as reformating it. And tried to install the software for the cdrom which is a USDrives IDE/ATAPI INTERFACE 24DT. Upon installing the software it asked me for this file MSCDEX.exe which I obtained from our other computer which has win 98. So what happened after that, the computer does not see that there is a "D" drive for the CD drive. I tried and tried and it won't see it. I used a startup disk from bootdisk.com for win98 OEM, also tried one from there called win98 SE, as well as one called win95. The win95 disk will startup in DOS only, thats as far as I could get. In the "C: dir it says that there is files from the win95 startup.
I decided that I'd try and reformat what was on there, and start all over again. Now when I go to C:\ format C: it says bad command or file name.
Then I thought that maybe the CDROM had somehow got disconnected, so I took off the cover and made sure everything was plugged in which it was, now when I turn on the computer, I get one long beep followed by 2 short beeps and nothing on the monitor!!!!

HELP!

You seem tobe going from bad to worse. Maybe you should get your dad to look at it. :-)

Mac, ok I've got that problem fixed. I did a search on here and found out what Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) means and pushed the card in more. Now I'm back to the regular beep again whew! Thank goodness.

Now can anyone help with my other problems?

Thanks,

I went to that site, and it's look very informative, but at this time it's not going to do me much good, if I have no working CDROM.

Thanks Fiddle

Boot with the 98 bootdisk. Messages on the screen will tell you if the cdrom driver loads. The last message should be mscdex loading from autoexec.bat. If the drivers loaded successfully in config.sys then mscdex will load and tell you the drive letter of the cdrom. If the drivers didn't load because they couldn't find the cdrom then mscdex will give a 'no valid device found' (or something like that).

Post back your results.

Sometimes when I reformat a drive, the CD
sometimes comes up as "R" drive. To figure this
out, I just started going down the alphabet
until it saw the right drive letter.

Fiddle,
The computer does not see that "D" drive somtimes with a startup disk, The drive letter designated to the CD-ROM may change for that session. Your CD-ROM is normally
"D" drive, it might be temporaily changed,
try changeing the "D" drive to "E" drive
it worked for me.

Fiddle,
What Bink wrote is possible if in bootdisk ( look in config.sys ) has reference to load RAMDRIVE as drive D:, so your CD-ROM should be drive E:

Hi Fiddle ... just my two cents worth
Use the boot disk and when it comes up specify start with CD rom support. This will load the CD drivers. Now more recent boot disks will create a ram drive which will most likely come up as D: and this will make your CD rom E:. Also when you format you cannot format C from the C drive. The command should be either from the A: or the ram drive D:. It would either be A:\format C or D:\format C. Either one will work.
