hello,
i'm trying to reformat my hard drive for the first time....can anyone recommend me some detailed steps or sites that would help me, because there are a couple of different steps..
also, my A drive makes noise when i insert a diskette in....any idea why this happens?
and also, there are some sites that i want to access but when i clicked on the links....my window would just 'blink' and i cannot access the links.
does this happen because before that, i had installed the spybot software that blocks cookies....could this have affected my computer? can anyone pls help me out? thank you.

Some useful FDISK & REFORMAT information links:

1.How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk

2.Hard Disk Partitioning and Formatting Procedure

***************************************

When you Insert a Diskette into the Floppy Drive it usually produces a short snapping sound
When you try to access the Diskette using Mouse clicks in the Windows Explorer or My Computer window or use the Enter key in a Command line with A:\>, it will produce some 'grinding' noise which is also normal.
If you get any error messages, while accessing the A:Drive with a 'good' Diskette containg data or Floppy Drive LED shows unusual behavior [ like constantly lit up] can be signs of failing drive.

Cookie requiring web sites can give you a " Passive Aggreessive" response with blinking cursor if you Block Cookies!

If these are with some and not all Hyperlinks it can be a problem with the site. If all hyperlinks have problem post back with the name and version of your Browser for help.

Open your Browser and from menubar click Help> About Browser name > Read the Popup applet :-)

If No Hyperlinks work on cliking in a browser, it may be a problem with the Browser Setting for Hyperlinks and not Cookie blocking software related.

Hi Karen, MaadhuriMN, and Top Farmer,

when i clicked on the links....my window would just 'blink' and i cannot access the links.

Many things could cause this, third party software being one of them. You could shutdown all those programs and see if the problem goes away.

The most common cause I have seen for not being able to open links is due to the oleaut32.dll file version. The file may have been overwritten by other software you recently downloaded. Post back with your version of the file. If you are not sure how to determine the file version follow the instructions below.

Click on Start and Find
Click on Files or Folders
Next to Named: type oleaut32.dll
Next to Look in: ensure the C: drive is selected.
Click on Find Now
Right click on Oleaut32.dll and select Properties.
Click on Version.
Post back with the number next to File version:

Best Regards,
Mesich

Karen,
Hi!:-)
You might have forgotten to answer my querry about the name and version of the browser you are using to surf the Internet. (i.e. Your Default Browser)

In whatever window you read this or posted your message, that is a browser. If that is the only browser you have then that is also your default browser as it will automatically launch on connecting to the Internet.
The top, colored-border of any window is its Title bar. In the present window, that will display the Name of the Browser at the end of the Title of this Webpage
Below the Titlebar, you can find the Menubar and the last Menu from left to Right is Help

1.Click Help
A drop down sub-menu shows up.
2.Click the last item there: About (name of browser) to get a message applet.
[Example: If your Browser is Internet Explorer it will be About Internet Explorer ]

3.From the popup applet, you can find the
Version X.X.xxxx.xxxx where X is a number.

If your Browser is Internet Explorer 5 or above and you have problem with Hyperlinks to many Webpages which usaully don't insist on cookies, please let us know.

You have the latest veresion of oleaut32.dll 2.40.4518.0

You forgot to post the Browser name!

Based on version number , I'm guessing it might be INTERNET EXPLORER6.0 but not the latest 6.SP1.

Reformat and Reinstall and doing all Windows Updates will cure this particular problem, if properly done.

But, to me that seems to be a drastic measure before trying other more simple things!

You may try the following:

A. End all running Programs EXCEPT Explorer & System Tray (or Systray) by selecting (click to highlight)one at a time, and then clicking the End Task button in Close Program dialog box as shown in the numbered steps.
1.Press ALT , CTRL and Delete keys to gether *once to open Close Program dialog box that lists all the programs that are running.
2. Click on one item to select and then click the End Task button to temporarily remove that program.
3. Wait a few seconds for Windows to remove that program from running until you finish your troubleshoot and Restart the PC later on.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 as above until only Explorer & System Tray are left behind in the Close Program.

*REMEMBER: If you press ALT+CTRL+DELETE repeatedly in a row , PC will REBOOT without giving you a chance to remove the programs in the above steps. So between End Tasks give a few seconds before giving the 3-finger salute ACD

B. Registering URLMON.DLL

1.Click Start>Run.
2. In Open:type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK
3.When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

4. Restart the PC by Start>Shut Down...> Restart>OK

5. Retest the failed Hyperlinks in Internet explorer 6.0

If problem persists, post back for other DLL files that need to be registered as above.

Yes it was kind of silly of me to create a link when that is your problem.

Copy/Paste the URL into the address.

Mesich,

The unintend but very 'positive consequence', of your posting the URL Hyperlink was indeed a 'diagnostic confirmation' of the problem Karen was experiencing, namely her inability to open webpages by clicking on hyperlinks is actually 'universal' and not merely 'restricted' to just a few URLs requring cookies.
:-)

Karen,

Thank you for posting the 'missing link,' no pun intended!:-) Mesich's Webpage (I just visited) has the full troubleshoot for your problem including the ones I was intending to post should the one already given wouldn't solve the problem of failure to open webpages by clicking on known good hyperlinks in Internet Explore 6.0.
Wish you good luck.

Thank you both for making this thread very interesting, useful and educational.:-)

Hi Karen,

There are many different Creative Soundblaster cards, you will need to remove the cover from the computer and look at the card. You should see a model number or an FCC number, post back with that.

Hi Mesich,
Good Day!

It is really interesting to watch Karen cross all the computer hurdles with your excellent help and racing towards the finish line in this final lap.:-)

Karen,

It will be helpful in the search for the proper drivers to know what exactly the make and model of the hardware in question. One helpful bit of information in case of a Brand name Computer is its make & model and in case of some manufacturers like Gateway , Dell and a few others the Serial Number also. These are displayed on the computer case (chassis) in front and/or at the back.

I hope all your remaing PC problems will have a happy and speedy resolution.:-)
