I am doing some work in Macromedia Director (which only takes avi or quick time video) and need to convert my mpegs into avis. When I do this they become 10 times as large. I see some avis on the web that are pretty long and hardly take up any space at all, yet my 14 second clips are over 125megs each. Is there a way to compress them?
Thanks for any response.

you might try converting them to the DIVX codec. I've noticed quite a bit of reduction in file size when I make my AVI's with DIVX.

AVI is about 10 times bigger than the compressed MPEG, that's normal. 9 min 26 seconds will take about 2GB of your hard-disk space for AVI-type 2 at resolution 720x576. MPEG is nomally 1/4 of this resolution (depends on NTSC/PAL) ie. PAL=356x288.

BOB,
I noticed a DIVX Player but not S/W for creating them ! Is this a feature of the Player that is Not mentioned OR do I need other S/W , If so can you tell me what that is and WHERE to get it ? I searched For DIVX Codec But came up with ZIP
THX
J

I haven't used Macromedia so I'm not familliar with it. If you download the divx codec usuall it will install the player and encoder as well. Do a search on Google for the codecs or if you can't find them, post back and I can e-mail them to you.
Once you have installed the codec it should show up in the AVI editing software under the codec options.
PS. Wongs answer is a very good one to follow. MPEG is going to be much smaller then AVI''s. If they don't have to stay in the AVI format I would follow his advice. I found a good editor/converter called TMPEng. You can also search on Google for this freeware program.
