I work at a internet help desk, and was wondering if I could get some input on this reoccuring problem I have been seeing lately. Seems like it happens mostly on 98 and ME computers. Customer's are getting red x's for pictures, I can always change encoding to western european (windows)and that will fix the current page, but when customer goes to another website, it automaticly switches to (iso) again...I tried putting it on autodetect, but that seemed to be no help. The problem seems to be that IE is not remembering to keep it on (windows) any input would be appreciated.

thanks,

James.

Hello James,
Don't you think the problem related is more in connexion with cookies than IE itself ?
Maybe cookies spywares ? download the program AdAware, this is a freeware and watch the result !!

Hi y'all.

James,
I assume you are going to "Tools/internet options/advanced/restore defaults" There is a "Show pictures" box there that has to be checked...

Just a thought

Your clients are having the problem, so downloading anything isn't gonna help, unless you can do remote administration and copy the files to the host machines and run it there. Or I suppose you could just advise them to download and run the utilities that have been suggested by the above posts.

G'day,

I have had this problem too over the years. I have asked many people and posted on forums.
However, it appears that nobody really knows what causes it.
I have been told that it is a connection problem (ie whilst downloading the image, the connection is broken), but I'm not convinced about that.
Surely, there is a Microsoft Certified person out there who can tell us exactly what the error is.
I will be watching this post..
regards,
Elric

Then there is the non-pay for MS support at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q283807 with the subject as:
"Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer" which is pretty much what has been stated by the (assumed) non certified folks here.

G'day all, I get this too mostly from Yahoo sites. What I do to get all the images back is to open the Internet Options and select the Connection tab, select my ISP then check or uncheck [it alternates] the 'Use a Proxy Server' box from the ISP Settings dialog box. Same for pages that won't open at all and a Refresh or Detect Internet Settings page appears instead.

Then I reopen the page and the correct images appear or the entire page opens. This seems to only happen in 98 but not 95 or XP for me. I have no idea why this occurs but the fix works [for me at least].

The little red x 'icon' is an embedded bitmap in Mshtml.dll for anyone who is interested in changing it, I did.

I need help too.

Please forward specific instructions to me via email for exactly what and how do I change my Dell computer (home XP) so as I can post photos on the forums without getting the red-x's.

Thanks, Dave
