Recycle Bin Errors

Having problems at the recycle bin lately. I will often do a complete dump of all files noted in the recycle bin, but then get an error message.

It says:

Error deleting file.
Cannot delete H_**AH:
Cannot find specified file

The ** noted above is difficult to read, and may be a division sign on occasion.
How do I bleep this from the system?

If you are referring to bulk delete of a lot of files in the bin then I have a sneaky feeling there is a bug that sometimes causes hiccups. It may just be an overload (RAM or CPU), so perhaps deleting less files more regularly would help.

It is possible the recycle bin is corrupted in which case you could try this:

Shut down and restart in MS-DOS.

Type the following lines two command lines pressing ENTER after each line:

attrib -r -s -h c:\recycled

deltree c:\recycled

This will delete the recycle folder, but it will be rebuilt as soon as you restart Windows.

You don't have to restart in DOS mode to delete the recycle bin. Just fire up the old windows file manager (winfile.exe), configure it to show hidden files, and delete c:\recycled, d:\recycled,etc. The folders (directories) will show up again the next time you delete something using Windows Explorer. HTH.

You live and learn. I'm a winfile fan but didn't know that it allowed you to delete recycled with Windows running.

As always, many ways to kill the cat - either way should work.

Also, I don't think you have to turn the attribute bits off to do the delete.

Derek...

Nope... Tried it. The pesky file is still there.

Now, to confuse matters, over the past two weeks I have had a couple of hard drives connected into the main board. I have about four old and noisy ones stored away, and have been looking each of them over for a good copy to an old program which began running odd. I connected all of them in as either a D:/ or and E:/ drive then began looking for the program, afterwhich some diagnostics were run, some other obsolete files overwritten, and resealed up again. It all involved about 1/2 hour each.

Could this new error in the Recycle Bin be connected with any of these hard drives now stored in the closet?

Yes, if there's a file in the recycle bin which was removed from one of those drives, when it wants to "clear" or, mark as "clear" that area of that drive (while running Windows), it won't find it as the drive/path (for that particular drive) is no longer there.

Deleting the troubled recycle bin (deltree/y C:\RECYCLED, deltree/y D:\RECYCLED, etc) in RAW DOS ~should~ remove any instance of the file. I think. Unless I'm missing something. ;>)

I can't remember if deltree removes hidden & system files (recycled is both). So if you want to go the whole hog type these four commands in true DOS hitting Return after each one:

attrib -h -s c:\recycled

deltree /y c:\recycled

attrib -h -s d:\recycled

deltree /y d:\recycled

Derek, Deltree over-rides attributes. As long as the correct path/filename are entered, it's gone;

Microsoft(R) Windows 98
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1999.

C:\WINDOWS>deltree/?
Deletes a directory and all the subdirectories and files in it.

To delete one or more files and directories:
DELTREE [/Y] [drive:]path [[drive:]path[...]]

/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to delete
the subdirectory.
[drive:]path Specifies the name of the directory you want to delete.

Note: Use DELTREE cautiously. Every file and subdirectory within the
specified directory will be deleted.

C:\WINDOWS>

Firstly, this is the Win9x Forum. There is an XP forum here for that Operating System.

Go to the Recycle Bin's Properties. Somewhere in the settings there is a choice to "Remove files when deleted. Do not send to the Recycle Bin". This may be set in your case.
