Sad to say, Compaq is very proprietary. In other words, you have to use their hardware and software only. They have hardware made just for them, and they write their own version of Windows to run on their machines. Restore CD's typically don't work unless you call them and get your credit card out.It is possible to correct most problems after loading a regular version of Windows on any Compaq. Be ready for about 1 week of headaches!
The first thing you must do after an attempt to load regular Windows, any version, (s/b: a legal copy of course ;-) is to already have the VIA Chipset 4in1 Patch file that goes with the motherboard chipset and install it, if they stiffed you with VIA. (Windows is written for Intel chipset platforms) Noting also, you'll need Winzip installed to run the 4in1. Now comes the fun!
Each problem you encounter needs to be remapped thru BIOS or Windows resources and memory address locations, reassigning each to an area where it works, then move onto the next. Blue screen of death is common after running awhile.
ALWAYS hard boot Windows! Shut Down/Power Off and wait 5 to 10 seconds, then power on again. Windows does not refresh hardware settings unless the unit is powered off! The RAM does not clear unless the capacitors bleed off. That's why Virus problems keep coming back. Always power off every reboot! ALWAYS!
Use Compaq parts if you have them, they made it that way on purpose, they want your money. And don't run aol, they destroy Windows!
When all else fails, they do make good boat anchors. But then, 18 years experience, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong! :-) Dennis Miller and George Carlin for President!
