Hello,
One of my friends has deleted his emails accidentally from Outlook Express 5.
Is there any way to recover the deleted emails. I need to recover around 500 deleted emails.

Thank you,
Biky

They've been deleted from the Inbox, and the Deleted items folder? You can't recover them from within OE, but a Google search resulted in lots of third party programs that can be used to recover lost data from OE.

Me too sekirt. Sounds like it might be a tool I'd like to add to my "toolbox".

Yes. Handy programs to have.

I came across this one a few months ago. This is the download link. MiTeC OE Reader 2.0 (Freeeware)

http://www.mitec.cz/Downloads/OE_Trial.zip

In additon, Tom Koch offers 2 programs. DBXtract used to be free. And MaCallan which is freeware:

Hi Sekirt
thanks for the link, but after downloading and extracting i am unable to recover any deleted emails.
While extracting, i get folders D5,D6,D7, Demo folders.
DO u have any information on using it, cuz after clicking on Demo, it just opens a window, i select and open the deleted items.dbx and nothing happens. i get error saying no messages in file.
is there any other software i can try, i havent found any free ones on google search.

Is there any other free ones.

Thanks again
Biky

Biky,

Don't know as to that one. Try the DBXtract 4.5 That is still freeware. It can be found on this page. Download, extract, double-click. In the "Action", select 'Recover Mode'. In the "Input", select the Identity, and file. In the "Output", select where to put the extracted messages. Click Extract.

Now if they are in html. There will be extra characters. ect-ect. Just a short description ;-)

See if that's of some use.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

I'm running on backup power. So, I think it's time to sign off ;-) Dan, oh well, you know :-)

Biky,

I'll check back later, to see how things went, ok. You're Welcome Biky.

That's if it's still here, and I don't get;

File Not Found
The file was not found on the server. Please try again.
If you are looking for Technical Support, look no further than the forums on the left hand side of this page.

Still can't figure it out. Some/same person posts, and reposts the same issue over. And it stands. But, someone does a search of CN. Tries what they find, and needs more help. But that's deleted, hmm. I know, wrong place and time to express. Sorry!

Since I posted 2 freewares, which one are you asking about?

1) Go through all the .DBX files. Not just Deleted Items.dbx.

2) If it tells you there are no messages, perhaps he compacted his folders? If so the messages are gone.

Is this checked off in his Outlook Express?
OE->Tools->Options->Maintenance Tab.
Compact messages in the background

If it is, then all his messages are gone from the .DBX fles.

Incidently, he should not have that checked. It can cause lost emails. Compacting should only be done while offline or by going to file and choosing Work offline. Once compacting starts, NOTHING else should be touched. Not only no internet but no other programs, games, etc; Just walk away and let it compact.

To compact manually, click File, choose Folder, then choose Compact All Folders.

hi CrazyOne
I tried and it worked but i get the recovered emails in .txt format, but i could not recover the attachments. Is there any way to recover the emails in email format itself instead of .txt format cuz i was not able to recover the word, excel, and other attached files.

Sekirt,
i used the 1st one i.e. mitec.cz..... one.
but it just showed a demo folder and other folders. yes, he has clicked on the compress folders, will that cause any problems?

thanks,

If DBXtract found emails, then apparently they are there.

OE Viewer isn't too difficult
1) Make a folder for OE Viewer.
2) Copy the .DBX files to that folder.
3) Click File. Click Open and choose a .DBX file to try.
4) Double-click to view an email. You have 3 tabs for a choice of view. (General/HTML/Source)
5) If you decide to extract it. Close the email and make sure it is highlighted in the list.
6) Click File again and this time choose Save Selected

That will create an .EML file which can be dragged back into an OE folder.

7) If an email has an attachment, when you double-click, it shows in a panel at the bottom of the email. Highlighting the attachment, also activates the "save attachment" button. Clicking that brings up a choice of where you want to save the attachment.

Go slowly, step by step, I am sure you can work it. If the emails are there, you can save both email and attachment.
