Okay I have a problem. I have just installed my realtek Ether card and upon installing it it has made it so my internet explorer is trying to access the internet via the nic card and not my modem (well that is all I can figure) because when I dialed up it connected fine but when I open internet explorer it brings up a message that says there is an error and then gives me the option to report error to ms or not to and to have internet explorer re-open or not but if I choose to reopen it gets the same error it just doesnt say what the error is even when i click the details to see what the error is it has just a bunch of numbers or code for microsoft. So I decide to to check the connection tab for internet explorer in settings to see what it had and it still had my regular connection set up. So I am not sure why it isnt bringing up my internet explorer so finally I just decided to remove the nic card from device mgnr and then physically remove it and then rebooted still had issues even when creating a new connection so I booted to ms dos and ran scan reg restore and it did fix the issue except now when I put the NIC card back in it wil have the same issue!!! I dont even have a network set up!!!I just bought the card to use when I go to my friends house to play a game on a network then !!! So if anyone can help me clear up this issue I would appreciate it. I just want to be able to have my nic card in the tower and installed but be able to have my IEX work when I am using dial up too. Also another thing before I installed the NIC card when logging into my win 98 se it had all the profiles listed and I would just choose mine and enter my password... But when I installed the NIC card it made it so it just had a sign in (name and password) and did not have profiles to choose from!! then if the name was off by a letter it would just create another user profile. It was treating system like it was a workstation!!! Is there a way to keep my OS as it was?? Or when I install the nic card does it just make my OS like this now?? Please Help

Sounds like a number of problems. Start from the top.

"internet explorer is trying to access the internet via the nic card and not my modem"

In ie, go to Tools -> Internet Options

Click on the connections tab and make sure the radio button Always dial my default connection is selected. I have found the Dial whenever network connection not present option can often cause this if it thinks it has a network connection.

Having a network client installed will require you to enter a username and password. You can force the system to automatically log in using tweakui, or you can (disclaimer I havent tested this) delete the network client (leaving the adapter installed)

I gave up with win98 profiles a long time ago. They are not real substitutes for users and do not provide the security (in fact all they really give you is a customised start menu and desktop).

If none of that works, you can install a NIC in 5 minutes.
