Comment:

I just installed Windows 98 SE on an old computer I have. My problem is that I can't find/install anything in my PCI slots. When I start windows, the Find New Hardware wizard doesn't come up. I tried adding the drivers manually, but nothing shows up. I've tried this with a Monster 3D graphics card and a NIC, both of which I know work. Any ideas?

Hi Earll

Try going into the BIOS Setup, and choose to "Reset BIOS Defaults"
or a setting that is similarly worded.

Some BIOS have an option to turn the Plug and Play on or off.

Enter setup as the unit boots up and make sure the option is on.

If you have an AGP Graphics card running the video, then DO NOT use the PCI slot next to it. Especially for the other graphics card.

If you do not have Agp ON THE MOTHERBOARD and you are trying to get the unit to boot up; then repost with some other details.

What details do you need exactly, FJ? I don't have an AGP slot. I looked through my BIOS and I can't turn off Plub and Play through it. I also followed Krystyna's advice and reset my BIOS to defaults, but the problem's still there.

I would need the "make and model" of the motherboard. Then I could look it up and read about what you have.

It's hard to repair a computer that is not responding - but it is nearly impossible to repair one from hundreds or thousands of miles away. With the motherboards manual and the video card information, there may be a chance to give useful advice. Without it; it may be impossible.

If a make and model are not there, post the FCC-ID number. We might be able to find the maker that way.

So what are you using for the video when you boot the unit right now?

If there is an option in the BIOS to activate PCI Pallet SNOOP; then turn it on.

Go to device manager in system in control panel and see if your hardware items are already identified there. Possibly as 'unknown device'. The graphics card may be seen as a generic adapter.

DAVEINCAPS, there is no "unknown device," sorry. FJ, I'm using an old 1mb graphics card I have to boot up now. As for my BIOS, here's what it says:

ROM PCI/ISA BIOS (2A59Ht5B)
Aware Software, INC. v4.51PG
Plug and Play BIOS Extension v1.0a

It's a very old motherboard...I don't even know where the manual is anymore. There isn't an option for PCI Pallet SNOOP either. Does this mean I'm screwed?

Download a copy of Belarc Advisor

Maybe it can tell us the brand and model of that motherboard.

P.S.
You're never screwed until you give up on youself.
