I have a 52/32/52 CD-R/RW drive that will not read a home made CD data disk, even one that has been made by the drive. This is the third drive that I have installed at this point to no avail. I asked a friend at work who also runs 98SE and has a CD-R/RW drive and he has been having the same problem. It will make new data cd's but will not read those already made. All I get is the message "Drive Not Ready". How do I solve this problem.

I was having the same problem, i just install win 98 and whenever i shut down my computer and then turn it back on it would say "drive not ready-system halted" All u have to do is change the IDE cable that has only two connectors, one to the motherboard and then directly to the hard drive. i have a 1.7 ghz p4 and now it works perfect.

Summary: In general cdroms below 4x won't read cd-r's. There are exceptions--I have a 2x that will read them and a 40x that won't. But I'm sure that's your problem. I stopped using those drives in computers...
