I recently came across some files with a ".rar" extentsion. Can anyone tell me what file type this is? Also, what program do I use to open *.rar files?

RAR are compressed files (like ZIP) with a pretta good compression rate.
WINZIP doesn't support RAR-files but many other programs do (like WinRar or WinAce).

They are compressed files similar to ZIP files. WinRar is a Windows program used for them and UnRar is a Dos program.
