I have a Win 98, P-II 350, 196 megs PC-100 RAM, Diamond V550 AGP card with 16 megs of vid RAM. A USR Sporster Winmodem, a Linksys ether network card, AWE 64 sound, A Yamaha SCSI CDRW, a toshiba cd rom, and 2 hard drives. A 11.9 Gig Maxtor, and a 4.3 Gig Western Dig. and an IWILL motherboard. It has onboard SCSI and supports ACPI. I have the Maxtor partioned in 3- 4 gig parts. and they are drives C,D,E. The Max is just one big 4.3 gig drive F. I have been getting random errors like the ones below, plus i have had many times where its says my registry is bad and i need to restart and restore it. I can not recreate any of the errors when i want, sometimes they are at startup, sometimes b4 windows fully loads, sometimes long after windows fully loads, sometimes never.
In order for Win 98 to detect ACPI functions, i had to use a special command line on setup. It took me forever to figure that out and i wondered y i could never use irq 9, but after using the special setup for win 98 that allowed it to detect ACPI, it changed a bunch of things and showed that irq 9 was being used.
When i run Fdisk, it tells me that i have 8 megs free in each of my hard drives (the maxtor and the WD) I have reformatted and partitioned many times, but always have 8 megs free. Once and only once, Windows detected it and created a whole seperate drive and drive letter that was a whopping 8 megs, kinda pointless i thought.
When the Maxtor hard drive powers up after a period of no use, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 "power-ups", i hear it start to power up, then it makes a noise like it is accessing, then stops and does it all over again. Sometimes though, it just works on the first try like i think it should. I called the company and they said it sounded like a spinning problem and sent a new hard drive. I put it in, and copied the old to the new and still the same problems.
I have 2 Ram chips, a 64 and a 128 and have tried each one individually in each of the four ram slots in my comp to no avail.********* SCANDISK LOG***********************

After Scandisk runs i get a error in the log called FSinfosector was fixed can anyone tell what this means...

your problem sounds identical to one I was having a few days ago. The solution on my machine was a malfunctioning CPU fan.
Check your fan and see if its working properly. If it is, it could be your CPU giving up the ghost.Hope this helps

For the record (as this is like seven months after the fact) I believe the key here is FDISK. I think Microsoft screwed the pooch again and is hiding an undocumented problem. The solution here, I have found in a similar case, is to FDISK these drives as non-VFAT drives (i.e. ordinary "non-large" drives) and then convert them to VFAT using the Windows facility. This is an incredible oversight and negligence on Microsoft's part if this is true -- and I know it to be true in some cases -- and do not know more than that. My tech guy, who is an MS EE, has also run into this in some cases -- hasn't nailed it down yet the last I spoke about it with him.

A few people have deleted advert.dll (and some others) and reported their system didn't crash anymore.
Visit this site:
http://members.xoom.com/advertdll/And also consider reading this:
Zor, this is something you might want to forward on to your readers somehow.
The following is a listing of all software known to install the Aureate spy
on your system. The Aureate spy keeps track of your Internet activities and
sends a report to Aureate every time you open your browser. The Aureate spy
places the following files on a Windows machine. [It is not known, yet, to
affect Macintosh or Linux machines.]
The installed files are some or all of:
adimage.dll
advert.dll
advpack.dll
amcis.dll
amcis2.dll
amcompat.tlb
amstream.dll
anadsc.ocx
anadscb.ocx
htmdeng.exe
ipcclient.dll
msipcsv.exe
tfde.dll
Here is a review of the contents and
code contained in the DLL's that Aureate makes use of. Here are a few of my
findings up to this point:
advert.dll
=======
This DLL creates a hidden window every time you open your browser. It
creates and sends 4 pages of information to the Aureate servers using port
1749 on your system, these pages include:
1. Your name as listed in the system registry ( not the name you installed
one of the programs with )
2. Your IP address
3. The reverse DNS match of your address. ( tells them what ISP and area of
country you are in )
4. A listing of ALL software that is shown in your registry as being
installed. ( Not just the companies they work with)
5. This DLL sends the following information to their server on all URL's
you visit:
A.) ad banners you may click on
B.) all downloads you do showing the filename/file
size/date/time/type of file(image, zip,executable, etc)
C.) full time and date stamps of all your actions while
using your browser
D.) the remote dialup number you are dialing in on (taken out of your
dialer configuration)
E.) dialup password if saved, does not "appear" at first glance to send
this through to them.
6. Contains programmers note: "Show me the money! I want to
be Mike!"advpack.dll
=========
Used during the installation only to check for other needed files.
amcis.dll
=======
This DLL modifies the following registry keys:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
2. HKEY_DYN_DATA
3. HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA
4. HKEY_USERS
5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
6. HKEY_CURRENT_USER
7. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Unregisterss oleaut32.dll from memory as provided by M$oft and replaces
with its own calls. Switches back to M$oft's when browser is closed.
Creates stub processes to be started anytime your browser is opened.amcompat.tlb
===========
This guy tracks any multimedia clips ( video/pictures/sound) that you view
It tracks the rating level on the
video/picture/sound and title / location Contains references to DblClickstill digging on this one! )
amstream.dll
==========
Setups TWO way communications between your system and theirs. Used to send
info and receive update commands/files

I hope you can help me.When I want install something comes always a window with:
advert.dll not found or amcis.dll. not found
or other dll files not found

go to grc.com the have a free program that will detect all spy files and reg. settings and clean them out if you choose to.
program optout 31k in size
Techsupport@computerbuster.com
www.computerbuster.com

Does anyone have fake advert.dll? The purpose is not blocking adverts (that can be done on proxy), but system stability. Advert.dll succesfully crashed my computer several times daily and I still want to use software dependant on it (e.g. netvampire).
regards, i.

What does the program MSIPCSV.exe do.
Runs on my system and I do not know wat this program is for. The install date is current (19/4/2000) and is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Since a few days I receive problems with a file called MSIPCSV.exe. It occurs every time I wish to connect to the Internet. I receive an error window and when I take a look at it, it tells me MSIPCSV.exe has created a stack dump, and crashes. I can access the Internet though, but it does it each time I connect to the Internet.
When I look at the properties of the file, it says IPC server, version 1.0.1.2, date
30-11-1999.
What is this IPC server for?? Anyone any ideas, of can someone send me a newer version of it? Thanks!!
