RAM, as I'm sure you know, is hardware (microchips). There is no software that can optimize it, although there are many packages which appear to claim to. Some (as you have hinted) make matters worse.

I am convinced that when RAM opitimizer programs are believed to have made an improvement it is because the user "expects" an improvement. The word placebo comes to mind. I've tried them all but my machine worked better without them.

If your machine is not performing well "tell us all about it". There are many ways we can help you to improve it without (in my opinion) delving into black magic.

As Derek said, they can't.

And here is why.

I agree with the previous two posts. Ram Optimisers are Snake Oil. Leave them alone.

If your system is running with config.sys and autoexec.bat perhaps because of dos applications you should run memmaker to maximize the available memory in the first 640K of memory. You can also configure expanded memory if the dos applications use that.

Memmaker is an old dos program not included with windows. It was available on a supplemental 95 disk and works fine with 98 also.

I can send you the necessary files if this describes your situation. If you're not using any dos application you don't need to use it.

Beyond that, I agree with what was said above about ram optimizers.

Note that if you go beyond 512M RAM (in my case at 512M itself) you will probably have to apply a tweak to the system or you could run into difficulties. MS didn't imagine RAM would ever be that large.

Post to get the details if you decide to go that way.

Incidentally for "most" folk 400M is plenty, only power users need to go above this. Make sure there are not other things you need to do in order to make the machine do whatever it is you are trying to achieve. If necessary post your problem or requirements.

After reading these posts earlier today, I uninstalled Rambooster and I haven't noticed any difference in my system today. Just one less icon in the tray. Still runs fine and fast!

Windows 98 does well with at 128 or 256. Perosonally I have 384 (128 + 256) and computer does great.

Depending on what you use the computer for, you could see a dramatic increase in performance by adding another 128 stick or a 256 stick. Adding memory is one of the least expensive computer upgrades available, and it's easy to do yourself.

Best Wishes,
Bob
