I know of four free programs, and I will list then in popularity. Grisoft's AVG, Alwil's Avast, H+BEDV Datentechnik's antivirus and Softwin's Bit DEfender. Most programs that you will by will only provide updates for one year, and then you have to renew to get the updates. Without updates an antivirus program is useless. You can get a free year and six month program at the Windows Update page, by using the three step for security links. HTH

All of the commercial AV programs are sold as a one year license only. Each year you need to buy a new license to keep getting the AV updates. If you buy the new version the following year, use the rebates that come with it and look for store discounts and credits you can get a new version each year for less than $10. Whatever your choice get one installed quickly.
