quake3 and game pad problem

win98se, Athlon700, AsusA7V mb, v7100ge232mb video card. I recently bought a Gravis game pad and downloaded a demo version of Quake3. The game pad won't work. I called Gravis tech support and they said the game pad won't work with Quake 3, Quake 3 was designed to work with the mouse and other keyboard functions. I want to know if the info I received was correct? If anyone has a gamepad that works with Quake3 let me know?

I use a gamepad with quake II with no problems. I don't know why they'd revert back to mouse and keyboard for quake III.
