And now when I reboot it says it is missing. Should I had removed it from Add/Remove instead of just deleting it?

Type sysedit at the run command and see if you can find it in the system.ini or win.ini and if you find it just delete that line.

I recently uninstalled Quick Time v5 using the uninstall utility that was provided. However, the uninstall didn't clean out the changes that Quick Time made to my Windows 98SE Registry (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.). I didn't find any related references in my WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI. Thus, whenever I power up my computer, the Registry launches QTTASK.exe residing in the Windows\System folder. As I don't want/need QTTASK, which is consuming system resources, can I simply delete the Registry. That is, can I safely delete the registry folder "Apple Computer, Inc." and everything contained in the folder?

As a follow up the my previous posting, I was able to staop QTTASK from loading on startup by going running MSCONG and deselecting QTTASK in the Startup tab. However, I still would like to clean uo the Registry entry. Any thoughts? Comments?

Me again.

I find another entry in my Windows Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

This is the actual Regisrty entry that launches QTTASK. Can I delete the Registry folder RUN-?

Note: For more info on QTTASK, also search under Windows ME.

I just recently found this little guy loading up, and for some reason I noticed a LARGE number of connections coming off NETSTAT.EXE, They all seemed to go away after I halted qttask.exe... Could this program be used for Apple Spyware? Can anyone else verify this?

You know I have been wondering about Qttask also. I knew it was part of Apple's Quicktime. I wondered its use also, because it loads but does not put an ICON in the systray. Conviently I just downloaded a program call TaskInfo2002 which is kinda a combination of Task Manager and Services(WinNT). This TaskInfo program will give you alot more information as to what files are actually running. I would recommend this program to everybody. Anyway back to my point about qttask.exe. On one of the lines in TaskInfo for Qttask it says this :

\BaseNamedObjects\_QTActiveXRegistryWatcher...

I also notice that Qtask is constantly running, increasing and decreasing the memory it is using.

I like the theory of Apple SpyWare, but it could be an unfounded theory.

Just my 2 cents on the thread.

Qttask is a program from Apple and if it's spying computers or not, I don't know, but in any case I removed it from my system.

As the registry entries go, I can tell you what to do if you have Win98 SE. Just open regedit and search for the string "run". Everything that is under run- can be deleted safely. In fact, you can delete the "folder" called "run-". Win will create a new one automatically. Under the "run" entry, delete the key referring to Qttask. You can also delete the "runonce" and in fact, if you have nothing running at startup (or don't want anything to run automatically) just get rid of the entries under all keys that will show the word "run" or "run-" or "runonce", etc. Be aware that those entries are close to each other in the registry, so if you find any other "run" entry where "run" is part of a bigger word or command, DO NOT DELETE IT. Of course, I recomend you backup (export) your registry before altering it.

An added bonus of removing the run- entries is that you'll be cleaning the list that will appear everytime you use MsConfig / StarUp tab. Also, check the actual starup folders in you hard disk.

Have a good one!
Nick

Has anyone noticed that when Qttask is running, your media players don't run any media that's using a Direct connection from the HD? Thanks

If you read the information on www.windows-help.net/features/qt-fix.html - you'll see that QTTASK.exe is a program integrated into the system, which helps users of older versions of QuickTime to re-register mime-types which has been wrongly registered with other software. - HOWEVER! :) - If you have QuickTime 5 or later installed, you can safely disable the QTTask.exe, which will get you around 5% more system-resources! However, read the info on the web-page, and you can also see how to disable the thing.
