Does anyone know if it is possible to recover
a backup that was inadvertantly written to a
CD-RW? I tried to restore it, but only came up with the file folders, but no DATA. The recovery process showed only 8mb. When you view the backup file it shows 500mb .QIC file
I know the CD-RW is not QIC compliant, but is it possible to rescue this DATA????

Hm, usually the MS backup program only compresses the data at 1:1.5, so that is a bit odd... have you tried copying the .qic file to the HD and then restore?

Well, what I mean is that I used Direct Cd in order to format the CD-RW disk that I used for my back up. (I usualy use udfread to read from my CD-RW disk.)

The original files I lost were ordinary windows 98 (FAT 32) files. Most of them were pdf or doc files. I used microsoft windows back up utility in order to take back up of them. So there was created a file named "mybackup1.qic" file (about 500 MB) on my CD-RW. Later I used also the same program to take back up of the files that changed and a second file named "mybackup2.qic" was created (about 1 MB).

I tried to restore the original files by two ways:
a) directly from the CD-RW disk by using the microsoft windows 98 back up utility. Although I use the "mybackup1.qic" file I can only take back 26 files and the full structure of the original directory.
b) by copying the "mybackup1.qic" and "mybackup2.qic" files on my C directory and then trying to restore as above. I take exactly the same result. The file "mybackup1.qic" has the right size of 500 MB.

Then I used the veritas back up software (it seems to be about the same as the microsoft windows back up utility). By this one I was not able to read from my CD-RW since it does not recognize the format of the media.

I would be grateful if you could help me because I lost 2 years serious work...

Well, I'm in the same boat you are in...about a year of priceless code

I backed up a 1.55GB set of files yesterday, and it will only restore the folders, not the files. This is due to some bug in MS backup that will make all of your original backup disappear when you update the QIC file...and I am attempting to find a solution. Go to post #108236 and see if anyone has followed up with a solution.

I also recommend contacting Microsoft and/or Seagate (SG actually wrote the backup program). If that doesn't work, try seeking professional data recovery help.

IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, PLEASE CONTACT US!
