Subject: PXE-M04 Error, and IBM bugs.
OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Pentium III, the usual.
Model/Manufacturer: IBM 300 PL
Comment:

I am having an error of 304 keyboard when I reboot the IBM,and I cannot use the keyboard commands to go into safe mode or use my recovery disk.It just sits there with the PXE-M04 blah blah blah 18h?

It stated it had 1.44 G available in one place, and it states it has 9. something in another place.
The drive with Windows 98 on it is the 3 gig,and I made a mistake by adding a picture file to the one with the wrong drive.
I then did a search, and it froze, which is very common for it.When I rebooted,it gave me the PXE error message after it gave me the keyboard error.
It sometimes freezes and I cannot even use Control Alt Delete to reboot.I have to actually pull the plug.
How do I recover it?

Is the glass half empty,or is it half full? Neither. It is completely full of water and air...unless you are on the moon.

There's some info here:

http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-140906.html

that indicates it may be related to a network adapter.

Also make sure the keyboard is plugged in the right port. And try a different KB if necessary.

Do you have the windows 98 cd-rom if you do get a windows 98 bootable floppy and reformat and reinstall.

The "usual" RAM.
blah blah blah.
one place...another place.
The drive with W98 on it (more than one?).
etc etc.

Forgive me if I have difficulty making sense of all this. What we need is a much more ordered posting with exact error messages.

I've concluded that you have some keyboard problem, so it might be worth trying another one to make sure it isn't the keyboard itself.

If you put a picture file on the HD with the OS on it, this should make no difference to anything.

On general problems such as freezes, as a long shot, Restart in MS-DOS and type scanreg /fix (hit Return). This rebuilds your registry and might help, if it is a registry problem. Type exit (hit Return) to restart Windows.

About all I can say in terms of what you posted.

Re #2. Well reformat could be suggested at the outset on any post except a hardware problem.

I think we might try and understand the post a little better first and get a few more ideas before bringing in the big guns. I trust the poster realises that reformat loses everything.

Sure - let's quit answering questions and just post the message:

"format & reinstall"

.. to save time as well as wear & tear

You are, once again, Microsoft's bitch

PXE-M04 initialising network bypass ...something after that, and ending in 18h.The reason why I can't post exactly what it said is because now it says no operating system found, and it will not let the disks register to reformat and reinstall windows.
That's too simple you see.
I need a way to get back in there amd fix it somehow...
All of your suggestions would be helpful under normal circumstances.
How do I get the disks to work?
I have recovery disks and the windows 98 disks, and one for the floppy too, but nothing works or registers they are in the drives.

You need to go into cmos/bios setup and make sure the drive you're attempting to boot from is listed as the first boot device. If the HD is first and it doesn't have the system files on it then the boot process will stop there and give that message.

If you're still getting that PXE error, remove any network cards you may have or disable the network adapter in cmos/bios setup if it's on-board.

This is how you fix it. Put the recovery disk in the computer.Turn it off.Wait five seconds, turn it back on. Press (1) then press enter and it will ask you to agree or disagree to wipe out any files that are causing the problem. AGREE,and then wait for the 100% then turn it off when it says successful, and turn it back on after five seconds and it will take you to setup.
Thanks for all your help (meh)

Thx for popping back to let us know - very clear and concise.

I have a feeling the original question was really "How do I run a recovery disk". Almost all of them are boot disks and work along those lines.

You might have to re-install stuff you've added since, which sometimes folk wish to avoid at the outset.
