Hi, I recently brought my laptop home from college. There it was connected to a network and ran on win98. Now i'm at home and i can't get the computer to load up. I get this error upon booting...

For Realtek Ethernet Controller RTL8139 v2.12
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

I really dont want to reinstall win98 becasause i have files on there that i want. Please let me know if there are anythings i can do to not loose my hardrive contents and still make this comp work again. Thanks.

-Matt

Boot up in 'safe' mode and remove the Realtek controller in the Device Manager.

This is a BIOS issue. Get in your BIOS and change your HDD to the first boot device. Removing the driver for your NIC will only make you post "I can't connect to my network at college, but 98 works just fine"

Alright, I finally got into windows. i went under safemode... it finally let me. I went in, changed some settings, but didnt delete that driver. Now when i startup it goes super slow, and i can't change the monitor settings (resolution and color setting). When i booted up, it installed an updated driver however, so now i have two monitor choices (even though it's alaptop with no external monitor). I dont know what's going on. I have tried doing stuff with both monitor settings, but everytime i change the settings it reboots and nothing changes. I'm getting very frustrated. I'm changing the monitor settings under normal mode not safe mode. Please Help!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I fixed my problem of not getting into windows and getting out of safe mode. So now my comp works, however.... it takes FOREVER to load up. It's not cause of my programs either. It's before i type in my passowrd to start the programs loading. It holds up on the Windows 98 screen, and right after at a blank black screen with a prompt at the top right. It just sits there, and after a few minutes goes into windows. Once windows starts it works fine. Any suggestions? Scandisk and defrag dont help. It' snot a problem like that. I"m confused.

This is for sure a BIOS issue. Get into your BIOS, then hit alt-p (for Dell Optiplex Gi), set NIC settings to ON(PXE-off). This will enable NIC to work but will disable PXE's, I think! Then hit alt-b, to reboot. Do not hit esc becuase it didnt work for me the first time. I rebooted then it work fine. Later, Raj

We are having a similar problem on a Sony FXA36 Vaio laptop. It will not boot. Message says PXE-E61: Media Test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM"

We can't get the computer, which is running WinXP, to boot into safe mode. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

MNS

The real way to get rid of the problem is to boot up Bios and change the order of
access to CDRom#1 because you are installing
a new system and it has to read from there.
It worked for me. Change it back to HD after
you get it installed.

I work tech support for a major computer company in the us... I have seen this issue a few times.. the only thing that has fixed this issue for me is flashing the bios with the same or above bios version.. might be worth a try..
