I have been told that when you delete an item such as text or old internet files, they stay in your hard drive. Our computer is old and does not have a whole lot of space left. How can I delete these files from my hard drive. We run windows 95 on an imb aptiva system.

Hi,
A fast and easy way is to do it though MSDOS. Just reboot your computer and press the F8 key while your computer is starting. Next you'll see a menu and choose, "Command Prompt Only" Next your'll be at the C: prompt. Type in, del *.txt When it finishes, you'll be back at your command prompt and the just reboot your computer so you can reboot back into Windows.
Good Luck!

Go to www.rocketdownload.com and download System Mechanic, you can use it free for 30 days. This program is an excellent way to rid your computer of garbage, old files etc, etc, etc,. Also don't forget to use its registry cleaner. It'll have your computer running as fast as it did the day you bought it.

Gerry I think you misunderstood. When files (not just text) are deleted from a drive, it's true that they actually remain there. However the space is recovered when you empty the recycle bin.
