Does your computer give you any clue as to what program or register or address the ptudf.vxd file is associated with ? Have you
searched your cds with win explorer for the
file ? Also, if you feel safe going into your
registry, you can check H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\
Services\vxd and you might (or might not ! )get a clue as to what it's associated with.Good Luck

Sorry,I should have said this.....The registry location (above) will list all the VXD files that are loaded during Windows start-up.

I feel your pain buddy. The same thing happened to me. I think if I could just find the file from a CD or the net I could just drop it in the system folder of 98. Good luck if I find anything I'll come to your rescue.

Do you have a CD-R or CD-RW? it appears that it MIGHT have something to do with the Prassi software.

ptudf.vxd is used by abCD - software for making your cdrw act like a floppy. Do you have a cdrw and packet writing software? that's probably the culprit, but if not, i'm clueless.
if you want version 1.1.070 of the file, email me and i'll send it to you. (btw, i have sony's (crappy) version of abCD)

Hey, did anyone find out a solution to this one? I am installing a CDRW and have the same missing file. I am using Adaptec UDF Reader.

I recently installed a Sony CDRW and accompanying software...Spressa, and now I see ptudf.vxd in my task manager, so I believe it is a file associated with this software.

I had the same problem using Nero Burning Rom software for packet writing to my CD-RW. After removing the packet writing portion of the software (as I only use CD-R), the same missing 'PtUDF.vxd' message appeared. After re-installing the packet writing, hey presto - the message disappeared.
I have version 1.3.149 of the .vxd file from Prassi Software USA, inc. if anyone is interested (drop me an e-mail). I have also noticed a 'PtUDFdr.vxd' file and a 'PtUDFapp.exe' file on my machine which may also be required as part of the installation.

What a relief! This PtUDF.vxd thing had me considering re-formatting, and starting from scratch. After reading these posts I've just re-installed Sony abcd and problem solved.Don't know if I'll ever use this app. but its certainly worth the space not to have to see that message again for the 800th time. Thanks

Same probem: I recently installed a Creative CD-R/RW with abCD/Nero Burn software. I hated the software so exchanged the product for a Phillips CD-R/RW with Adaptec software. But, when I tried to install the Phillips CD-R/RW my computer would not detect it. Then, I tried reinstalling my old CD-ROM and it wouldn't detect it either. I have to unplug the cable from the CD-ROM to boot my system, which then gives me the PtUDF.vxd error message. My computer no longer detects any CD-ROM drivers. Any idea how to fix this problem short of formating my HD, and without a CD-ROM??? What a nightmare!

if you've already removed the program from your computer, or don't plan on using it, and you're getting that error message, an easy fix is:

go to START and click RUN
type REGEDIT and hit enter
click the boxes next to the following keys in this order:
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
System
CurrentControlSet
Services
VXD
go down to PtUDF and delete that key.
reboot your machine

make sure to export the "vxd" directory before you delete the key (go to file/export/and then save as a file name). That way, if you have problems you can import that key again.

Why do I get "ptudf.vxd" error message when I open CD Extreme™ software?

This error occurs when there is a conflict with the abCD™ program. Uninstall abCD, and you should be able to open CD Extreme™.

this is right off the sony site, just removed the software and it gave me this error also. it's sony.

:)
