OK. I seem to have trashed my personal folders in Outlook in two stages: I was planning to move from our server to an ASP (currently on network using group/corprate setting). I noticed that my pst file was nowhere to be found - not on my local pc nor on the exchange server machine - just did not show up when searching for *.pst i nfile finder. Yes, I did have show hidden files switched on and in fact cd find other users pst files. I put this to one side to worry about later.... But then I started to archive folders etc and my PC crashed. Thereafter Outlook prompts me for location of pst file. Obviously I am stuck as I cd never find it before. Even though Outlook was working and I had loads of folders and files there. Help any clues folks?

I hate to say this, but it sounds to me that you didn't have a .pst file configured (or not properly) for the used user account. So all of your email messages and folders should still be in the Exchange Servers mailbox for that account.
You can try a couple of things to see whether or not your messages are gone for good. :(
If the above event happened no longer than five days ago, you could start with booting in to "MS-DOS prompt only" and run a
scanreg /fix[Enter]key. When done, boot in to Windows, go to Control Panel, double-click on the E-mail/Post icon. On the first tab check if there is a line reading Personal Folders. If so, click on the Properties button to check what the path is to where the .pst file is stored. You might also want to check the path for your Personal Address Book.If scanreg /fix doesn't do the job, you'll need to boot to the MS-DOS prompt again and then run
scanreg /restore[Enter]key. Follow the instructions on screen, and choose a date prior to the crash. Once it's done, reboot in to Windows, and repeat the steps mentioned above. If scanreg /restore also doesn't do the job, then it's like I already said most likely that you didn't have a .pst file configured for the used user account.
Again go to the Control Panel, double-click on the E-mail/Post icon, select MsExchange Server (if not already selected) on the first tab, click on the Properties button to write down the Mailbox name and Mailserver, click on Cancel. Back on the first tab, now delete the MsExchange Server, and click OK (2x). The E-mail/Post configuration window should be closed.
Now double-click on the E-mail/Post icon again, it must have been closed first otherwise it's not going to work, click on the Add button, select MsExchange Server, click OK, type in the Mailserver and Mailbox name, click OK two or three times to close the windows and return to the Control Panel.Launch Outlook, and check if your messages and folders are still there. If so, then they were still stored in the mailbox on the Exchange Server.
Still no luck, then I guess as a last resort it's time to consult your Network Administrator and ask him/her to run a restore from the most recent backup, prior to the disaster, of your mailbox. Mind you this can be a nasty task for him/her to accomplish, so some patient on your site is required.
When the restore is successfully done, you may encounter double entries in your Scheduler/Agenda.Hope this helps, and makes some sense. :)
