I get the following error message when the system is booting up:
The PSAPI.dll is linked to a missing export NTDLL.dll:NtAllocateVirtualMemory
I read that others had a similar problem, so have tried the solutions offered, such as:
1) Restarting in DOS and typing "Scanreg/fix"
2) Start/Run "MSCONFIG" and reviewing the items checked that open at startup, but don't know which program is causing this error message to appear, so don't know what to "un-check"This is for a Windows98, PII/128 system.
Thanks!

Yes, I am running Norton AntiVirus - Corporate Edition. Is there a "bug" in this program that I need to Squash!
Thanks!

I started getting the same problem this morning 03/10/2003. I'm running Windows 98 SE with Norton Internet Security Family Edition 2001 installed. I've been running this application for a year or more with no problems.
Is there a problem with the app or is it someting more sinister.
I've also Norton clean sweep 5.0 installed and I can find psapi.dll in its installation dirs.

We have also been getting an "error starting program required file psapi.dll missing" message upon bootup. (Windows 98)
Seeing this and one other problem, I ran a McAfee scan and it reported no viruses.
However, we have a hidden command somewhere which installs its own default Internet Explorer page. We have tried cures such as changing the registry, and checking startup and win.ini, but haven't found the culprit.
Changing the default page back to our preferred page only works for a few startups.
The psapi.dll error message appeared after the other problem.

discovered that loader.exe was unexpectedly appearing in my process list after receiving these errors; searched files that had been accessed at the same time this file and lo and behold found iedll.exe. You may be aware of this as its referred to under the posting "IEDLL.exe needed" elsewhere on this site. Anyway, I removed iedll.exe and then removed the following entries from my registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [iedll] C:\WINDOWS\iedll.exe
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [loader] C:\WINDOWS\LOADER.exe
Everything appears to be working fine now.

Greetings,
My computer shows a kind of problem that the required psapi.dll is missing or nowhere to be found in the system.
I would just like to ask, what is the importance of psapi.dll to my computer. how does it affect my computer and my work.
thank you

I get the same pop up dialog box on boot up, I'm running Win98SE. This just started a couple weeks ago, after I closed down too many programs too fast or something. I'll try the above suggestions. I did research and heard there's a virus around that deletes this file? I ran a full scan, nothing. If I close the error dialog box after boot up and go online, everything seems ok. Not sure if psapi.dll is a "necessary" file in 98SE/ME?
Thanks for this topic.

I am running windows 98 se on a compaq presario 7471.I too have a battle with the PSAPI.dll error on bootup. Next I receive an error "installation failed". I close the windows and my computer runs. It seems to lock up more often now. I just battled the "C:\windows\IEdll.exe file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file and then try again" error and learned that most people with the same problem also end up with a "loader.exe file missing" error. What do LOADER.exe, IE.dll, and PSAPI.dll have in common?

just did some more research, and a bit of stressful "cleaning"...
It appears that any kind of "loader.exe" is a gateway program for one or more types of new trojan virus, maybe. It boots up with windows, and makes things a mess. I also found out that psapi.dll is primarily used on Windows NT, and so those of us with Win98 get the error box, as the virus program searches to hit all possible window systems. What I did is update my virus list, switch the computer to "safe mode", and then run a full virus scan. This is the obvious one..delete anything that's wrong!
The tricky (for me, Mr. Panic) part is that you now need to go into the registry from safe mode.
Click start, click run, type regedit, that's the registry editor.
The main area that this stuff seems to be in is the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run..check all the folder with "run" in them, and delete any "loader.exe" files and the like. Don't delete the "empty" ab files. Also check your antivirus company's latest updates for other things to take out of the registry!
Good luck to anyone dealing with this. Just don't panic, it's just a box of wires and chips.

I have been receiving the message that a required DLL file PSAPI.DLL was not found. Please restore the file to my system

do I delete the loader program from my windows directory as well?
thanks for the useful thread
Win 98
Cheers

I'm having the same problem as everyone else, except the "PSAPU.dll file" box is also switching my homepage from Google to Search.net. I've followed the steps listed in #11, and the pop-up error box that was appearing after booting up is gone, but it's still switching my homepage.
Any ideas how to eradicate this?

I am also receive the PSAPI.dll error when my pc is booting up. However, I am running Windows 95. Should I follow the steps that psylobop outline? Any assistance that will help me resolve this will be very appreciated. Thanks

Hey, I'm running Windows ME, and it seems like most of you have 98 or NT...however, I'm getting an error message: PSAPI.DLL was not found and so on, like everyone else. Obviously, this problem is not exclusive to my program or anyone else's, and though I've gone through a number of forums, I can't get a handle on what is causing this problem. I know the file is gone, is there a place I can download that file? Are there certain things I need to do to prevent this from happening? My computer is slower, things not opening quickly, and (while many of you have more) I have 319 megs and should not have any performance problems. I've read about another .exe file that leaves the computer open to Trojan viruses; these I know are dangerous and can corrupt a lot of things. If anyone has a complete, step-by-step process I should go through, especially for semi-literates like me, I would greatly appreciate it. I do know that we have to renew our virus protection subscription, which has been quite outdated. We had McAfee, is there a certain brand/model that is best? Thanks for any consideration and posts!
Tim
