PS/2 mouse NOT DETECTED

I'm running Windows98 SE on a PII 400. I accidentally unplugged my PS/2 mouse from my computer while it was running and now everytime it boots up Windows WILL NOT detect the mouse that is present. I've checked the IRQ settings and it shows that the sound card has taken IRQ 12 - which is the one that is supposed to be assigned to the mouse. Is this an IRQ issue and if so, how can I resolve it?

Max, I have had this problem before, and it turned out to be a bad or intermittant cable between the motherboard and PS/2 port. You will have to open your box and have a look. Move the cable around a little and try again. Good luck. Moe

Thanks Moe, but I've been trying just about everything I can think of and yet Windows STILL won't detect the mouse. I suspect it's an IRQ problem but I don't know much about IRQs except the fact that IRQ 12 is currently not free for the mouse. Is it possible to manually reassign an IRQ and if so, how?

Nothing seems to work! Each time I boot up I keep getting the message: "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now." The mouse is right there! Why can't Windows recognize it? Can someone please help?!

I've got exactly the same prob with my intellimouse. thing is every other mouse works fine. I fixed it by attaching another mouse, booting ok then installing the drivers for my intellimouse. switched off plugged other mouse in and it booted up ok. thing is after I installed some software it lost the mouse again, then I had to use the other mouse for one boot then switch back. it's by no means the perfect solution, sometimes the wheel is deactivated and I have to let windows update driver but it then works out it's got the best one and activates the wheel. are you using intellimouse? letme know if you get a solution, but just try tricking it with another mouse first.

Problem is, Windows simply refuses to detect the PS/2 mouse. Even after deleting and reinstalling the drivers for the mouse. I tried connecting a serial mouse, which worked fine since Windows loads the standard mouse drivers, BUT I NEED IT TO RECOGNIZE THE PS/2 MOUSE. For that I need IRQ 12 to be free and as i've mentioned before, IRQ 12 is currently taken by the sound card ever since I accidently unplugged the PS/2 mouse. My question is how can I free up the IRQ so that it will be available for the PS/2 mouse?!
