Programs not starting in Windows 98

OS: Windows 98 s.e.
CPU/Ram: 333mhz 256mb Ram

A funny thing happens now where my internet explorer will start fine, i can open folders ok, but anything like exe. mp3 or avi files will not startup, even though they are shown as running in the Close Program box???
This happens every now and again. Please Help.

If they are in the Close Program box then windows tried to load them but was unable and they are likely to stop responding. My guess is the program that opens them (winamp or windows media player) has a problem and you may want to reinstall it.

No error messages appear anywhere, just cant get exe. or other files to appear on desktop, even get the message 'insert windows 98 cd' when i click on some exe. shortcuts????
