a friend sent me norton internet security symatec and after installing it, norton got rid of alot of the viruses and some of the viruses couldnt be erased so norton asked me to "quarntine" it or however u spell it. but anyways this window kept showing up and telling me to restart my computer, after 7-8 times i got tired of it so i deleted the norton anti-virus.. straight after that my zip files, winamp, photos (only .bmp format works), windows media and explorer dont work anymore??? so now the only way i can go to explorer is to click on the "start menu" then click on "windows update" ... here are some error messages i get - when i start my computer it says: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows application. (after typing spacebar it says:) The windows registry or system.ini file to this device file, but the device file no longer exists, if you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated applcation using its uninstall setup program. If you still want to use ther application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to the missing file. (after spacebar it says:) C:\PROGRAM~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 {after spacebar it says the same as above but change the last line to:) C:\PROGRA~1\NORTAN~1\SAVRTPEL.VXD
now when i click on the windows media file it says: An internal application error has occured. (after click on OK button it says:)This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. (after click on details it says:) WMPLAYER causes a general protection fault in module USER.exe at 0004:00006195.
Registers: (and so on theres alot of numbers and letters) PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM :( and sorry for my bad english.

This might help.
Go to "Control Panel" then "Add/Remove Programs". Scroll down to "microsoft Internet Explorer" and push the "Add/Remove" button. A box will pop up that may give you the option to repair Internet Explorer.
This may solve some of your problems.

You could try a scanreg/restore and pick a date before your woes started. This replaces your registry (system.dat and user.dat) along with system.ini and win.ini. However, if Norton erased some files that may not help. Just a suggestion.

badboy: i just did what you told me and this what happend.. MSHTA performed a illegal action through the middle of the repair and when i closed that box, the repairing stopped? and when i restarted my comp straight after that.. a box came up saying GRPCONV peformed a illegal action? and when i closed that, another box came up saying MDSETSPA performed illegal action? that doesnt look too good but hey guess what.. i can open windows media now but it freezes when i tried to play a file :( maybe cause the repair didnt finish so do you know why those illegal actions came up? if so then maybe i can try fix that problem and repair the internet explorer again.

RE; my #3. That may not work with the dos that way. Sorry, it's been a looonng time since I had to do a restore.
The best way is to start tapping the F8 key on a fresh boot. This should give you the MS boot menu. Choose COMMAND PROMPT ONLY then type in;
scanreg/restore

Files may have been damaged by the viruses that Norton detected. They were deleted or quarantined. Then Norton was uninstalled.
Restoring the registry, as suggested by Dan Penny, is a very good idea. Then, try the IE repair again.
But your OS may be damaged badly and need to be reinstalled.

Dan Penny: thanks, ill give it a try and will it automatically fix everything or do i need to do other things too? sorry but im a newbie with computers so i guess you got to give me full information sometimes

It may fix quite a bit, but as I said, if Norton deleted certain files outside of the restore ones I mentioned, you may be looking at an O/S re-installation.
The errors you were getting re; user.exe should be eliminated, as that file is tied into user.dat, which is the user part of the registry. (Personal settings etc.) System.dat is the Operating System (O/S) part of the registry.

If you have to re-install, an "over the top" installation is what you should try first. ie; not formatting the C: drive. Just install again, but watch for the installation location. It will want to install to C:\Windows.000. Redirect it to C:\Windows instead.
Feel free to ask any other/further questions, that's what we're here for.

dan penny: i just tryed the F8 thing and there where 6 things listed (.cab) with dates and all of them said "Started" so i clicked on the first one and it said something like "well done there were no errors" and yeh anyways i restarted my comp and did the F8 thing again to restore the other 5 but this time there was a change from the one i restored, it said "Not started" instead of "Started" so what does that mean? and by the way do i need to keep restarting my comp and restore the rest of the other ones?

umm.. user.exe is still there, i just did the find thing and found user.exe, system.ini, desktop.ini ? its still there but why am i still having trouble opening winzip, photoed, windows media etc ? oh user.dat is not there, maybe thats the problem. OS reinstall? will i need to bring the hard drive out to the shop? i dont know nothing about OS reinstall.

I started to reply to this thread earlier but you have problems and it goes much deeper than anyone here can see.
These quarantined and removed files are the program files.
Restoring a registry will only restore the pointers to these files and not the files themselves.
Your machine states that you need program.exe. This is kind of a generic name for a specific program's .exe that is now missing (infected and then removed or quarantined). It doesn't know the name of the .exe so it calls it program.exe.
When you restore the registry you only need to restore one of the good ones. It creates a backup of each first boot of each of the days shown as the dates of those backups.
The one that was not started was the one that you had replaced when you restored the first time. Many posts on Computing.net start with "I was trying to help a friend when I don't know what happened..."
I think you need to make sure the virus/viruses are all gone and then find a friend that actually knows how to do these things or do fork out the big bucks at a shop to get it fixed.
You need to get rid of viruses.
You need to reinstall Windows.
You need to reinstall any and all other programs effected by the viruses. It is really not all that much to do. It just takes time and then a little more time to get it how you want.
If you find that you have to take it to a shop then get advise from this board how to go about doing that. Meaning how best to be prepared to get what you are wanting when you get the PC back from the shop.

Thanks Bryan. Well stated. (In the future I guess I should state that only ~ONE~ scanreg/restore be done.) Who knew this would happen???

As stated above, a reinstall overtop is indicated, although this may not fix everything, it's very much worth a try.
While in windows: put your Win98se CD in the CD-ROM drive. If install does not automattically start use windows explorer to navigate to the root of the CD-ROM. Doubleclick setup.exe and reinstall will start.
Make sure to have your ProductKey before this process and be carefull that windows installs to C:\WINDOWS (the default usually) directory.
This process will save almost everything, including your programs, settings and drivers.
Best

jubalsams: i just did a $findfile thing and it listed alot of set.exe so which one do i select? heres the list..
1: setup.exe - folder: c:\CABS - size: 6KB
2: setup.exe - folder: c:\Windows\TEMP\INSTALL3 - size: 1,201KB
3: setup.exe - folder: c:\Windows\TEMP\INSTALL4 - size: 1,301KB
4: setup.exe - folder: c:\Windows\TEMP\INSTALL1 - size: 59KB
5: setup.exe - folder: c:\Windows\TEMP\INSTALL2 - size: 59KB
6: setup.exe - folder: c:\Windows\TEMP\INSTALL - size: 59KB
7: setup.exe - folder: c:\program files\internet explorer\setup - size: 519KB
8: setup.exe - folder: c:\program files\mspress\startshere\win98sh\samples\sample program - size: 59KB
9: setup.exe - folder: c:\tombraid - size: 210KB
10: setup.exe - folder: C:\document\phynx\phynx\download\nort...\Rescue - size: 250KB
11: setup.exe - folder: C:\document\phynx\phynx\download\no...\MSSHLIB - size: 246KB

None of those. It's the SETUP.exe on the CDROM.
"While in windows: put your Win98se CD in the CD-ROM drive. If install does not automattically start use windows explorer to navigate to the root of the CD-ROM. Doubleclick setup.exe and reinstall will start."
"....be carefull that windows installs to C:\WINDOWS (the default usually) directory."
As stated above, it will want to install to C:\WINDOWS.000. Ensure you redirect (browse) it to C:\WINDOWS.

ok but what do you mean by "BE CAREFUL that windows installs to C\WINDOWS(the default usually) directory." and then u tell me to ensure to redirect(browse) it to C:\WINDOWS ?
so where exactly do you want me to install "windows" to ?

Because the installer will see that you already have a folder with the name C:\Windows it will want to install in a new and undesired folder by the name of C:\Windows.000.
Undesired because you will then have two C:\Windows folders. You don't want that. You want only one so when the installer offers to install at C:\Windows.000 hit the Browse button and navigate to C:\Windows instead so it will overwrite the botched version that you are now wanting to repair.
Of course, if you have not completely removed the virus then you will be doing it again.
Bryan

oh, ok thanks for the explaination bryan.. pity that i found the win98se cd but dont think i have the productkey as jubalsams
said to make sure i have it *sighs*

As long as the Win98se CD that you have is the one that was origionally installed, you can get the ProductKey from the registry.
Click Start Run then key in regedit and navigate to this key and write down the ProductKey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Best

ok thanks, by the way what the hell is kernal.dll ??? its so anoyying!! everytime i open something now, its all about the kernal.dll error, any ways i can get rid of this error ?
