Program setup after restart error

I am working on a friends pc and suspect that an attempt to install a program has been made but not completed. Upon system restart the program cannot continue to install maybe due to corruption or missing data. Is there any way to locate the setup files and delete them to stop it attempting to install again? Is there a memory cache somewhere that holds stuff to be run at startup? Many thanks.

If you type msconfig and then select Start Up and here are the programs that run at start up . Uncheck the offending program.

START - RUN - type MSCONFIG - OK - START UP. This will list what is loaded at start up and you will probably see the item there. Alternatively, if you start the PC in safe mode, it should start without anything else being loaded, you can then have a look around to see a part install.
For a complete list of what the start up items are, go to......

Thanks guys, i've learned something there.
However, it turns out it was spyware called New Dot Net. Apparently if not properly deleted it corrupts the internet connection (that was my main problem).
