I am trying to clean up my hard drive and uninstall unused programs. When I go to the add/remove function in control panel, not all the programs I have installed are listed. Specifically, I have several old versions of AOL (6.0 and 7.0) in their own directory, but neither of these show up as an option to uninstall. There are several other smaller programs I would like to remove also. If I just delete the program folders, will that work, or do I need to invest in an uninstaller program to really clean up my harddrive.

If you are forced into picking off folders and files here are a few pointers:

Look at the date/time of the programs own folder before deleting it. Do a search in Find/Files & Folders for that date. Look carefully at any file any file with the same date and similar time (in Properties). Tread carefully but if you feel "certain" that you have found another file that is part of the program then delete it. Don't rush to clear your bin just in case.

When all the files are gone there may be registry entries left about. Run a registry cleaner such as jv16 Power Tools. I mention this one because it has an easy use page that simply lists program names and suppliers that you can untick. Other aspects of this package should only be used if you feel at home with them.

.... better add that the URL's given in #1 and #2 are a much safer and quicker approach. With such programs now available my alternative should be seen purely as a "last resort".
