I am trying to install 98 onto a clean hard drive. When I boot from the 98 boot disk and try to run Setup.exe from the cd rom I get the error: Program cannot be run from dos mode. I've tried everything I can think of on this. I booted directly from the cd, I've tried different boot disk, different installation cds, I even flashed the bios. Can anyone please help?

Have you tried the setup.exe in the Win98 folder on the CD instead of the one in the root folder?

Give me ambiguity or give me something else

It sounds like you are trying to run win98 upgrade disk for upgrading from win95 to 98 or 98 to 98se something like that? which requires to run in windows.

"When I boot from the 98 boot disk and try to run Setup.exe from the cd rom I get the error". When you use a proper boot disk you should get an option after the floppy does its thing to install Win98 from the CD. That is all is takes. The harddrive must be partitioned but not necessary to format ahead.

I'm sure my disk is not an upgrade, and also I've tried using the install from CD option, and I just sends me back to the dos prompt.

I think you probably have a win98SE 'Update' CD. The Win98SE 'Update' (not Upgrade) CD will not install from Dos. You will have to install Win98FE and then run the SE Update install from windows.

Describe what is written on the disk.

If the CD says "Win 98 Starts Here" : that is the demo CD.
