Can any anyone offer some advice on the the speeds and numbers associated with processors. I'm looking a buying a new processor but i'm getting confussed with the varying speeds (eg:600mhz, 800mhz etc..) I currently have Cyrix 6x86 166, im trying to compare the differences.... Thanks....

Well the higher the number the faster the processor its as simple as that. Another thing you might like to know is cyrix chips are s--- so dont get one of those. Im not familiar with the socket 7 cpus cos they are getting old and are b4 my time, but I think the pentium II's may be socket 7 so they will fit right into your old mobo no worries, you 'll have to check to make sure, just ask the venodor for his fastest socket7 cpu. You should consider changing the motherboard so you can go to a celeron or pentium which use socket 370 ,and you will be able to upgrade to some of the fastet chips on the market depending on what money you want to spend, there is no way in hell you'd be able to use the cpus that you mentioned unless you change your mobo bc the sockets are diffent. Heres some basic info you may find of interest. The Celeron is a cut down version of the Intel pentium. The Amd duron is a cut down or cheaper version of the Amd Athlon.
The athlons have faster bus speeds with the right mobo of course.(double the speed of pentiums that dont use rambus. Rambus brings the pentiums on a par with the athlons but there more expensive) And the athlon has a bigger cache mem than the pentiums, yet the athlons are half the price. which is good for us. So why arent the Athlons more prolific, I have no idea, maybe someone else can answer that one. Anyway happy hunting.
You will get very little improvement with just a faster CPU. Replace the motherboard and CPU. It will cost a little more but you will get a BIG improvement. Your motherboard won't handle a 800mhz CPU. Probably not even a 600mhz.
Summary: Is there some freeware/shareware that will show me a processor's speed (real or clocked)? I usually check it on the start-up but some machines I deal with only show it on screen for less than a secon...
