CPU/Ram: pentium II/128
Comment:

Have old Compaq Presario Model 5030.
The board is a Compaq O4C4H,
Bus clock 66Mh,
with a 300meg Pentium II,
Ram @ 128Mh,

I would like to install a faster processor in this. I think it will take a Pentium III with more speed, but am not sure. would appreciate your input on this. Thanks

A P2 board will NOT take a P3 and vice versa.
Sorry, but in short, thats the answer.

You can run a Celeron 400mhz - Slot 1
JP # 1 2 3 4
___ On Off Off On

You can get to Celeron 533mhz with a 370 /Slot One (Slocket) adapter and all jumpers off.

or get to 1000mhz with a powerleap adapter from

@Kailas, not entirely true. There appears to be some PIII procs that conformed to slot 1 specifications, but then there is the issue if the Compaq motherboard would support the settings to accomodate the CPU to the fullest. That would be a question for Compaq to answer.

And then there's the issue of the availability of said processors.

The best speed I found was a 766mhz that apparently is plug n play from:

http://www.upgradestore.co.uk/acatalog/Processor_Upgrade.html

I tried for ages investigating this issue as I to have a PII 300 in my PC, anything faster than this was a no go because of the 66mhz FSB speed.

I am still contemplating whether or not it's worth the money as a second hand PIII 1.5 - 2 gig complete machine can be obtained for a couple of hundred quid.

funickk , thanks for correcting me there.
Doing some google work now :)

btw wrt reference to response#4, I found this on the link given - PC100 FSB
Now this requires a 100Mhz FSB to run at its full potential. I dont know if the mobo in question can provide the required speed.

Thanks to all. From your input and that of others, I'll begin a search for a p3 that will fit a slot one board and step up the FSB to 100Mhz once I have it in. It will either fly or fry. gonna be fun to give it a go. Thanks to many!
