I upgraded my aol to aol 7.0. Ever since I've been having probs connecting...AOL told me to just uninstall aol 7.0 I did this & now I get an "illegal" message & it shuts down. Would uninstalling aol 7 have auto reinstalled BACK my earlier version?? Or have I missed something & should have REinstalled aol (whichever version) after uninstalling it?? (instead of just uninstalling it)Tnx.

Here is a simple answer to all aol problems DON'T GET AOL!!!! haha seriously tho aol does suck. You can get a TRUE internet connection from someone else much CHEAPER!

I'm sorry, but I do not have the solution to your problem either.
I agree with the previous post in that the best thing you could do is not use AOL anymore. It's widely accepted amongst technicians that AOL causes many problems. The only reason they are so successful is because they have an incredible marketing department.
A lady once donated a nice laptop to my church. It gave her endless problems and she was convinced it was a hopeless cause. After working on it a bit, I realized the only problem was that she was using AOL. I felt guilty accepting such a nice laptop since she did not realize the laptop was still perfectly good. I told her I would fix her laptop (format the hard drive, re-install Windows) and give it back to her if she bought my church the wheelchair it needed. She agreed and got her laptop back. She has not used AOL since, nor has she had any problems with her "hopeless" laptop.

Again, I have to agree with the other posts - I too have had numerous problems with AOL.
On a more practical side, it may be worth completely uninstalling AOL and removing any references to it in the registry. The problem with AOL is that is integrates so deeply with the internet and tries to take the whole process over. Once you have done this, reboot and try to reinstall the software again. It could be a corruption within a file that is not removed during a simple 'uninstall'.
Hope this helps!

Sorry about these stupid responses, he didn’t ask for advise, he asked for help to fix an AOL software problem, so keep to the point! If would be helpful on some specs on your system, to help with this error!

installed aol 7.0 ang had no buddy list. so i started getting rid of it to go back to 5.0..now i can t open my browser, ie internet explorer. and a norton problem with mail. my laptop has me os and i have restored twice as far back as 20 before the problem started to no avail. reinstalled cabs twice to no avail. dumped norton and reloaded and still have same error. please help if poss I don t want to have to dump 3 gigs of stuff. tks rich

this should not be a problem. aol is number one because both of marketing, plus they offer more than the average isp.
uninstall aol
go to start, find, files and folders
in the name box type in "aol*.*"
ensure lookin lists the c: drive
click find now
after you search out the aol files click edit then select all
then file then delete
then aol is completely removed from the system (not counting the registry files)
do a thourough scandisk and defrag before you reinstall aol as a new member.as far as response number five goes, if you read this here is your problem:
your internet explorer is not compatible with aol v5.0. you need ie5.0, but probably have ie5.5. goto add/remove programs in the control panel and highligh "microsoft internet explorer 5.5 and internet tools", then click add/remove. after doing this, click "restore" and just keep clicking ok or yes (no matter how scary it is). good luck.

I have a cable modem connection, and I have an Aol account (why? Don't ask me!) I installed aol 6.0 it screwed up my system so bad I had to reinstall windows...More recently I downloaded aol 7.0, installed it, and I had no internet connection, So I called my provider (comcast) they said "oh aol 7.0, yeah that's a known issue, it screws with the registry call aol and tell them what happened". they gave me the number, I called they said "no aol does nothing to the registry your provider is lying to you, this is not our problem". Now I know it is there problem because five minuts before installing I was online..remember I downloaded aol 7.0...so now whos problem is it? Its mine I guess because after being on the phone for 5 hours, and getting in arguements with many techs, and supervisors...it's not any of their faults, they didn't write the code. So I am so angry with aol, If there were aol stores I would hapily throw bricks through the windows, and burn the store to the ground. Any one have comments fell free to email me...never the less I'm not paying for aol for the next few months so...JesseRyski@aol.com Thanks

I too had problems after installing the "new and improved" AOL 7.0!! The new program does not detect my cable ISP/LAN connection. I have reinstalled it and made 6 calls to AOL and 2 calls to my ISP. AOL tried to blame my ISP. Even I who am fairly computer illiterate, know that the problem lies with AOL. Bottom line, I cannot use AOL 7.0. My 6.0 works fine. As soon as I finish changing over to my cable e-mail address, I will be finished with aol forever. Hope you get a fix for your problem.

My mother installed 7.0, and it crashed and burned her system. She couldn't logon at all, and AOL is her main internet provider. Meanwhile, a scan using Norton anti-virus found a worm that attacks Internet Explorer. Apparently an employee had a really horrible sense of humor.
She can now access the internet, but can only go to AOL sites. help?
P.S. - Does anyone have a 6.0 copy of AOL? (I advised her to go through another ISP)
Please e-mail: tygerusmc@hotmail.com

I had 6.o and like a dumb___ installed 7.0. My v.92 only conects at 19,200 and half of the time wont even load the welcome screen or say "youv'e got mail". I have a pentium 2 and a 400 meg processor so I know it cant be my system, or atleast i hope it isn't. I strongly believe it's 7.0 also. But i also know people who have had no trouble with it. Go figure. Now I'm in the process of loading it onto my husbands pc but aol cant conect and get the access numbers. Still trying to figure that one out!!!!
Any suggestions, short of canning the whole project???

A friend was having trouble with her email connection through AOL. She was running a pentium, no name brand comp, using Win95, with 1.25 gig free space, and 64kb RAM. Her performance was running around 80% prior to running AOL. Another friend of hers upgraded her from ver. 3 to ver. 7 when she couldnt access her email but could access the internet. Now she could access email and IM but not the internet. When trying to access a website in Ver. 7 would get message "Operation could not be completed due to low memeory or hard drive space, please close some applications and try again." Then it gets hung up, I kept pressing ok and message kept popping up. Only way to close it was Cntl-alt-delete and end AOL task. Talked to several techs at aol, got disconnected several times while on hold, was told to reinstall Ver. 7 twice using differenct disks, uninstalling the AOL adapter in system information, cleared out temp files and cache (did that on my own at the very begging), even told to install Ver. 5 and add more memory. Well, i knew i had plenty of memory, more than was recommended and plenty of resources available. Bottom line. On a whim, I reinstalled IE5.0 off a Win98 disk, and that got AOL up and running. My assumption is Ver 7 somehow corrupts some IE installations and doesnt link AOL to the world wide web. As i said before, email and IM was passing through fine, but there was no access to websites. Try reinstalling IE5 or higher of any cd that may contain it (other than AOL). See if that works. Good luck!
