Hi,

I'm trying to fix an old computer i have and got hold of windows95 (the 30 disk version) so i reformatted the hdd and started the installation, everything was going alright until i get to disk 3 and the bit where you have to select the type of installation (typical, custom and so on....).A box comes up saying "setup cannot read the windows 95 setup disk. Make sure the disk is inserted in the drive and the drive door is closed". So could it be a faulty disk causing the problem or somthing else? if it is a faulty disk is there somewhere i can get just the 3rd disk?

Certainly sound like a dodgy disk.

Try copying it to a newly formatted floppy using someone elses machine. Right click the A drive and use "Copy Disk".

It might just help, I've known border line floppies work in another drive.

I don't have any experience with Win95 on floppies but MS office Pro 4.3, which is from the same era, had a couple of quirks. The first couple of disks had to be write enabled to install. MS then wrote the info from the install screens to one of those disks, can't recall which at the moment. So you may need to write enable the disks. Also, I believe that the format was 1.72MB instead of 1.44MB on the first couple of disks. There were programs to format at those sizes. Probably still available.

Post back the date and size of the file(s) listed on the disk. I have the 13 disk upgrade version as well as several different 95 cds. If I can find an exact match I'll send you the files.

Check your email. I have 3 different versions of Win95 on floppies...13, 21, and 30 disk versions. I sent the 30-disk version of Disk 3.

Did the disk file that Dave357 sent match the files listed on your disk? Did you get the same error message when using the disk he sent? Are you booting from disk 1?

I ended up getting it installed. Got the cd-rom version :-) and now have it upgraded to windows 98. But now i have a different problem witch is when my computer starts up(before the taskbar loads) i get the new found hardware box come up for my modem and just after it finds the drivers for it i get an error come up saying:

MSGSRV32
an error has occured in your program. To keep working anyway, click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program click close. you will lose information you entered since your last save

so i try and click ignore and it dont do anything so then i click close and it just hangs there and doesnt load anything. Please tell me i wont have to reformat to fix it :-(

MrNeed -

I've had a problem before where W98 would not recognize a previous driver installation from W95 .. don't know what causes it.

Usually, though, if I get a "new hardware found" window, I cancel it and do the install from the new hardware menu in the control panel. It's possible that W98 is trying to assign a port which is already reserved for something else.

Maybe you'll find something wrong in the "System / Device Manager" section of your control panel.

I suspect a port conflict.

now i managed to install the drivers but now when im in "internet connection wizard" and i get up to the part where it detects the modem it say "windows detected a modem but was unable to add it because the setup information file is corrupt or cannot be found". I had to download the driver off the net from my other computer cos i lost the disk so could it be possible that it got corrupted when i was downloading it?

BTW its a D-Link DFM-562e
