Comment: I just did a clean install on WIN98SE on an old Gateway P90 and now do not have access the CDROM which is connected to the secondary controller. This is a known problem and is documented by Microsoft in knowledge base article Q189518, however their solution does not work. The secondary controller is never available in the device manger even with both channels enabled on the PCI/IDE controller. The secondary controller is visible when booting in the safe mode but cannot be removed as it states it is part of a parent device. I believe this may be a "ghost device." The CD works fine when using the realtime drivers from the WIN98 starup disk. Anyone have a solution on how to enable the secondary controller?

Reply: (edit)I have removed all controlers in normal boot where the secondary is not visible. Removing the parent in safe mode does not remove the secondary.

Reply: (edit)The BIOS is American Megatrends, now Micro---? I have talked to them and they say this is the latest version for this board and should have no problems with WIN98. MH--Can you expand on the extract esdi file. Where is the file and and is this a DOS command? If so can you provide the syntex. Not that up to speed on DOS. Also when you say reload controller I assume you mean let Windows detect it.

Reply: (edit)use this extract command from the win98 dir and it will search all the cabs and extract it for you,the extract.exe is in the win98 dir as well as the cabs: Extract /A /Lc:\windows\system\iosubsys win98_22.cab esdi_506.pdr and yes let windows detect it and reboot, you can also try to manualy add it if you know what type it is ex. (intel 82371ab/eb)

Reply: (edit)MH--Followed your instructions and everything seemed to work but alas it did not solve the problem. I now have the following on a normal boot: PCI TECH PCI IDE single or dual port controller Standard IDE/ESDI hard disk controller Both have ! by them which I can correct by changing the driver. When I do that an additional one Primary IDE controller (single fifo) appears. All three are now clear of conflicts. Boot into safe mode and the above three are visible plus the secondary controller. Removing the PCI and the standard does not remove the primary or secondary, and they cannot be removed as they are not parent devices. I believe it is an IO resource conflict. Any other suggestions?

Reply: (edit)I have exactly the same problem. I got tired from searching for a solution and so I use the disk in compat-mode for a while now since I have a 2nd cdrom on scsi available. I urgent cases though when I need an extra cdrom I do the folling: I remove the 82371AB/EB controller and both it and its parent disappear. When I boot and let hw detection find the disk as well as the cdrom I let it use the busmaster driver again but just after that autodetection evrything is fine !!! Both are up & running and there are no conflicts ! Since both are working well under Linux I never had a doubt that the hw is fine anyway but this was the final proof. No recipe I found so far on the never turned out to be a final solution. (e.g. I have NO noide entries in the registries somewhere..) I hope that helps somebody for a while.... Beyond that I still appreciate a final solution...:-) regards Holgi

Reply: (edit)oops, I forgot to add that the magic effect is gone after the next reboot since no hw detection is going on. The conflict and the ! are back and the cdrom is gone... regards, Holgi
