I'm running Windows 98 with Outlook Express. My e-mail is all messed up. I can send messages but not receive them. I'm at my college and am using the LAN here. This is the error message I keep getting:

An Outlook Express store file may be damaged. Please use a utility such as ScanDisk to verify and repair any damaged files. Account: 'smtp.mail.drexel.edu', Server: 'pop.mail.drexel.edu', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0155

I tried running ScanDisk but it didn't want to complete for whatever reason. It kept saying that other programs were running and it didn't have enought memory to run, which I don't understand because everything was closed and I had 2 gigs free. I'd appreciate any help. Needless to say, I can connect to the internet with no problem. Thanks.

Run scandisk from either 'safe' mode or in Standalone Dos.

Before you try to run Scandisk make sure that all ICONS that appear in the lower right hand corner have been closed out. They will reappear he next time you run the program. Just leave the yellow speaker and the clock. The same goes for when your about to run Defragmenter. This is a must !!!

Well, I tried both suggestions to no avail. Both times I tried ScanDisk (in safe mode and with all of the lower right icons closed), it frozed up towards the end and I had to restart my computer. The think that really bothers me is the fact that I don't remember deleteing anything. I don't understand how I could be missing these files or whatever the problem. Thanks for the suggestions though.

One more way to run ScanDisk & Defrag

* Do a Control/Alt/Del [hit all three keys to bring up the Close Program window], one by one highlight & End Task on everything running except Explore & Systray
* Set your Screen Saver to None [Start/Settings/Control Panel/double click on Display, then on Screen Savers on next window]
* If the AutoUpdate "Update Reminder" is running in the system tray, it may also interfere with Scandisk. You can remove the AutoUpdate notification by clicking the Update Reminder icon and then either installing the recommended updates or clicking Remind Me Later.
* Right Click on Task Scheduler in systray [lower right] & click on Pause Task Scheduler
* Open Control Panel and look for a Find Fast icon. (If you've never installed Microsoft Office, you can safely skip this step.) If you see this icon, double-click it, pull down the Index menu, and choose Pause Indexing. Close Find Fast and close Control Panel.
* Turn Power Management off Start/Settings/Control Panel/Power Management, & set all three to Never

* Run Scan Disk [Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scan Disk], check it to automatically fix errors
When Scan Disk is finished:
* Run Defrag [Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Defrag]
When it's finished, restart your computer so all programs will be running again

There are several other ways to run Scan Disk & Defrag, this way works for me

Scandisk still didn't want to finish. It gets to a certain point and then just freezes up. I can still move my mouse but nothing is clickable. Are there any other options out there? Should I maybe buy or download some sort of error software? Once again, thanks for everyone's help.

Do you have any firewall software? Have read of problems concerning some firewalls interfering with defragmenting but not about scandisk.

Try running scandisk from Dos. Go into dos and when you see C:/, type scandisk/all. Press enter. It should run scandisk and fix any errors. If you can't get to dos, restart your computer and when it says starting windows 98, press F8. It will give you some options. Go to command promp only and then type C:/scandisk/all.
Hope it helps!
