I recently installed a NEC NR-7800A CDRW drive. When I boot, I now get three beeps, then the OS loads. Once loaded the cdrw does not show up. I have an AMIBIOS, and three beeps is apperently for "Main memory read/ write test error". Why am I getting three beeps for the installation of a cdrw drive, and how do I get it recognized, and working properly?
Thanks for any help in advance!

In BIOS, does BIOS see your new device? Did you properly set the MASTER/SLAVE jumper on the device?
Default setting on most new CD drives is MASTER.

Yes I set the jumper settings to master, I also tried every other jumper setting just to be on the safe side, thinking maybe it has awkward settings.. :Shrugs: I did forget to note one thing though, when I open the cdrom drive(it gets power) it engages the hard drive in an exact sync with the cdrom. (the lights flash exactly at the same moment) I have no clue wtf is going on with it. :)

Do you have the ribbon cable on correct?
the red stripe beside the power plug?
Also check your cables and make sure they are not off by 1 pin or have come loose

Its installed properly. The jumpers are set right. The ribbons are dumby raised anyhow, so theres no way to put them on backwords. So im pretty sure its installed correctly. :\

OK, maybe I am beating a dead horse, and saying something dumb here....
1). Check to make sure you do not have both devices on the same IDE set to MASTER.
MAKE SURE...2). It may be possible for the IDE ribbon to be installed incorrectly on the mb...
make sure you have pin 1 of the ribbon cable on pin1 on the IDE port on the mb.3). If you have not pushed the ribbon cable completely, it is possible some of the pins are not making full contact. Make sure both on the mb side and on the device side, that the ribbon is fully inserted and is not crooked...
4). At this point, you might want to use the AUTODETECT DEVICES setting in BIOS to see if you can force the mb to detect the CD ROM device.
5). If everything is set properly, your IDE ribbons, your jumper settings and you have power properly plugged in, then it probably is your device which is faulty.
After all, given that:
your mb is working properly
your ide ribbons are correct and seated properly
your jumpers are set correctly
your power is enabled to the deviceThose things are correct...it can only be your device...

I went through and confirmed all of what you said Jim C. I thank you for the efforts, but everything is hooked up right. I even double checked to make sure. As far as the device goes, I popped it in a new dell system, and it worked perfectly. The OS on that system is Home XP. Now im beyond confused and am ready to toss the whole system through the window.. Or maybe whack it with an axe... :| It makes no logical sense. Thanks to everyone for your time and help. If you think of anything else post it, ill keep checking up.

Temporarily disconnect the new drive and see if you still get the beeps when you reboot. It may not be the burner but something you did while installing it.
As far as the bios not seeing it--that's not necessarily a problem. If you identified it in cmos as 'cdrom' it may not show up on the posting screen. Usually only drives identified as AUTO show up there. But the bios doesn't need to see it anyway as long as the controller it's connected to is enabled.

Hi y'all,
Nice job, Jim C:-)
Danny
This may help you, install your CD ROM and the Burner. Already mentioned, I think:-)
This is the bible
IDE 1...
H/D=Master...
2nd H/D= Slave (If there is one )
IDE 2...
CD-RW=Master...
CD-Rom= Slave...Remove everything in Device manager pretaining to the cd-rom and the cd-rw, if they are showing in device manager...
Boot with windows 98 se, bootdisk, choose with cd-rom support, with your cd windows disk in the cd-rom...That should give you the drivers for the cd-rom...When you get to the C: prompt, reboot the system...Then install the cd-rw...Unless windows finds the cd-rw...Then just follow the on screen dialogs...
If this fails, purchase new ribbon cables..Good luck

I suggest a refocus on Jim's #7 post.
4). At this point, you might want to use the AUTODETECT DEVICES setting in BIOS to see if you can force the mb to detect the CD ROM device.
I did not see you confirm this step was taken or not.

Bryan
