My older computer with a newly installed winXP (was win98) will not recognize a floppy when it IS in! It worked perfectly before I installed the XP. It says please insert disk. NOW what have I done? Any ideas?
Thank you

Is the (floppy) drive recognized/set up (R/W) correctly in the machines bios?

Is it "seen" in Device Manager?

(Realize that if this post starts leaning more towards XP it will probably be removed.)

Bios

If you have My Computer on your Desktop, r-click on it, choose Manage, then Device Manager. You'll need Admin priv's to make any changes.

Is it the drive or the disk in the drive that XP doesn't see?

A formatted disk should have what called a 'media descriptor byte'. Dos and win9x ignore it but for 2000 and XP it must be there. If it's not there they will see the disk as unformatted.

If that's not it, when does the 'please insert disk' message come up?

So much for the new system ; )

I think Dan has it right, as usual.

I guess I need to write a script to fix this.

As M$ points out in their article, a 'sector editor' is not something for the casual user.

Also this amazing tidbit from M$:

[media descriptor byte] is at offset hexadecimal 21 (15h)

Nails it right down, huh?

You'll sleep better now that's cleared up.

That's offset decimal 21 (15h).

Here is a debug script (copy/paste into text file named MDBFIX.TXT):

L 100 0 0 1
E 115 F0
W 100 0 0 1
Q

Make sure Q has a blank line after it. Then from a dos prompt key in:

DEBUG < MDBFIX.TXT

This writes F0h at the 22nd byte (at offset 15H) of the floppy in the A: drive.

Are you upset that I posted here? I read all the "9" messages. Sorry. I posted here last week with my win98 system that I was desperately trying to load with a wireless card for my daughter to take to college. I had to put winxp on it just to get it to take the wireless card. It has been a total nightmare for me. Im just trying to save some money! Derek helped me get through some of it. Then it wouldnt read the A drive or disk. I still havent corrected that. Would you like for me to post on the winXP from now on? I am not trying to break any rules.
Thanks

If your query has to do with XP, then yes, post related questions there. If it's hardware (O/S independent) there's a forum for that. Etc, etc.

No one is ~upset~, it's just that efforts are being made to try to get people to post in the correct forums.

Hi lass,

The script posted by jubalsams should fix the floppy to work in XP.
