I recently upgraded from W95 to W98. After figuring out all of the bugs, I was able to get my system running. Unfortunately, I got brave. I backed up all of my important info and formatted my drive. I did a fresh install of W98 and now my modem isn't working. IBM doesn't have a drivers available for my system and a Mwave 288 modem/soundcard.

Any ideas for a fix or should I contemplate trashing the card and buying a new modem and sound card?

PC - IBM Aptiva 2176-c55
Here is a list of things that I've tried:

1. Download drivers from IBM... none available.

2. Remove current driver and reinstall driver.

3. Physically remove modem, boot and shutdown pc, reinstall modem, boot pc.

4. Uninstall printer drivers b/c they can interfere with modem detection/drivers.

5. Troubleshooting docs with win98 -> including echo atdt.. commands to check for pc -> modem communication. None.

I would get a new modem and sound card, but Mwave drivers are reported to be available at this site, can try it first.

Howdy, I would go out and buy a real sound card and modem and use the Mwave for target practice.

Like many other Aptiva owners, I was very disappointed with the performance of the IBM Mwave modem. One thing I found was that the Mwave modem uses a DSP chipset that I found was only compatible with the actual Aptiva Motherboard. Also, I found that the Mwave is not PNP compatible, and it actually used up 4 IRQ spots in the system resources. Bottom line: get yourself a high end 56K modem and a 3D Aureal Sound card (PCI) as these are extremely reliable and don't cost a whole lot.

well I have an MWAVE modem and I experienced the same problem as you. I upgraded to win98 from 95 and my modem wouldn't connect. So I replaced my winsock32.dll with the original version (got it from a netscape 3.1 installation disk)and it works fine. I don't know if this is the cure but look into it and see. PS. make sure you rename the dll's DON'T delete them.

Upgrading to Win98 has been a nightmare for me with my Aptiva 2144 m51 and the MWave sound/modem. A couple years ago, I gave up on using MWave as my modem, and use an external US Robotics Sportster 56/x2. I kept the MWave to use it as a sound card. Since upgrading to Win98, I've been unable to play midi files. I tried reinstalling Win98 -- it didn't help, I tried reinstalling the MWave drivers from CD -- bad idea. Now I have the MWave Blue Screen of Death and can only boot up in safe mode. What a royal pain in the butt! I'm writing just to vent my frustration and to say I'm going out this weekend to buy a third-party sound card and I agree with Kevin's suggestion -- take the MWave card and use it as target practice. Good luck everyone.

Patti

It's cool to known that we are not alone.

I find solice after reading the Aptiva Mwave sound/modem problems here. I've tried every trick in the book. I don't give up easily but it's a no go. I'm convinced the best way to go is get an external modem & sound card. IBM Aptiva...NEVER AGAIN!!
