I have a OfficeXP Pro with Frontpage cd, and I was trying to instal it on my computer. I checked the system requirments and I was above all of them. So I started to install it. Before it installed, it said that I need to update some system fles before I could continue. So I clicked next to update the files. At about 60% through the update, I got a message saying that in order to complete the update I need to run ie5setup.exe from the cd. I could not get past this message whenever i tried to continue the update, or even try to install OfficeXP again. The funny thing is, I have INTERNET EXPLORER 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am currently running Office 97 with service release 2b and I am trying to upgrade. Does anyone know what I can do?

Maybe you need to uninstall Office 97 first and then try installing MS XP Pro. I have that same XP Pro and I have installed many times without any problems.

Before I try that idea, I don't have the Office 97 Professional CD with me! Is there any way I can make one using the installed Office 97 Program Files on my computer? That CD would just be a back-up in case things don't go so well.
dboy

Re #2. About impossible I'm afraid. Office 97 (and all but very small simple programs) have to be "installed" which creates the associated registry entries. Just copying files from a machine onto a CD won't work.

Ok, but if the installation does NOT work, I'm in trouble because then I do not havemy Office 97 CD. Is there a way to get around the error message during the system fles update?
dboy

I've not run into this before but I would be inclined risk sending it to ie5setup.exe
In the unlikely event that it reverts you to IE5 then download IE6 SP1 from:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
You can still collect the later cumulative IE updates from Windows Update as far as I'm aware.

I have a burned CD-R with ie6setup.exe on it, but i cannot find the ie5setup.exe file on my Office CD and a cannot find it on google. Do you have any suggestions on where I can download it (I searched microsoft.com, but I could not find the setup file download).
dboy

ie5setup.exe and ie6setup.exe are files which are normally used to start the installation of internet explorer (5 and 6 respectively).
I doubt it will be satisifed with just that one file alone so unless it will accept ie6setup.exe instead from your burned CD which contains it, then the only option is to download IE55 SP2 from the website I gave. That was the latest version of IE5.
I can only think it needs this in order to link with your IE so it might well accept ie6setup.exe if you point it to it on your CD.

I finally found the ie501setup.exe file on my cd and I was installing it, but during the installation it said that I should close all applications and then try again. So I did that, then it just said that again, I even tryed to install it from the beggining. p.s. I got the installation to work because I uninstalled IE6, and Windows 98SE has IE5 shipped with it, so when I uninstalled IE6, I got IE5.
dboy

Well, not really. I tried to install Office XP again, but I got the same error message, and that was with IE5.0, and I had read someware on Microsoft's website that I need IE5.01. So how do I get past this error message. i closed down all apps including the aspps that were running in the background exept for AVD Anit-Virus 7.5 Free. Would that have caused the error message when I was installing IE5.01. Derek, i tried that website, but when I downloaded IE5.01 (no SP) all it did was download then nothing! I am going to use that website as a backup right now, because I found the file.
dboy

I wouldn't have thought AVG would cause that error message but it is as well to knock off anything that might interfere. As I said earlier it is hard to believe that it just wants that one file because it's just one of many that are involved with IE install.
If you do go to that website I would choose IE55 SP2 rather than IE501 SP2. The IE55 version is much newer so it is a better bet if it wants to install the lot.
Frankly I've no idea why it is asking for an IE setup file at all (least of all IE5) .....
DerekW

I doubt Firefox would shut it up because that's a totally different animal with quite different file names. Nice browser tho.
It seems odd that it's asking at all. I can only imagine it is to ensure that spell checkers and other facilities are linked to IE & Outlook Express. It ought to be satisfied with IE6 just the same.
DerekW

Ok so I'll try the IE5.5 download and see where I get to. I really hope it works, 'cuse I'm fed up with Office 97 (it's wayyyyy to old!)
dboy

If by any chance this works then see what IE version you have afterwards. If it is anything less than IE6 SP1 I would then be inclined to replace it and get the latest updates.
DerekW

It turns out that my sister got a laptop, so she gave me her old Windows 98 computer, which has Office XP on it, so now I have 2 computers, and I don't need to install Office XP on my original computer. Thanks everybody for all your help!
