Hi all,
Have just installed a new (well actually old) CD-RW drive on my PC (as my current PC had no such drive).
Everything seemed fine. I can play CDs no problem, and my PC didn't start looking for a new driver when I rebooted, so I assumed the old driver was fine.
But when I try and save a file to the CD-R I have in the player I keep getting the message "Cannot save...the folder is marked as 'Read Only'". Anyone have any idea what's going on?

You don't save files to CD-R. You need to burn them to the CD-R with software like NERO,ROXIO or other burning software.

Technically, you can save them to CD.
To do that the CD must first be formatted with one of the above mentioned programs.
Only after formatting can you copy and paste directly onto the CD.5

Actually you need a 'special' program to use windows 'Save' or 'Paste' commands. Roxio's 'Direct CD' or Nero's 'INCD' will do it. Personally I don't like either one and prefer to use a regular burning program.

To avoid any confusion.
There two available processes to get files onto a CD.
One is to burn them on using burning software as noted above. (The normal process)
The other is to use the other programs to allow one to use the CD in the drive as if it were a large floppy disk (UDF format) where you can copy files to it like a floppy disk. (The special process)
In either case you need to have some type of application designed to perform one or both of the processes. The burner drive alone can not save files or burn files to a CD. With the proper drivers it can only play or should I say, display the contents of the CD in it's drive.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up guys. I understand what I was doing wrong now. Forgive my ignorance!

Actually, one other dumb question guys. If I want to burn MPEG videos (or any other kind of videos) onto a cd, do the same rules apply?

Actually more rules if you want to play your videos on a standalone DVD player. Then you might have to change the format of the videos.

Sorry to be dense again, but do you have to use a DVD-R/RW to burn video onto? I, perhaps foolishly, burned several mpegs (which my DVD player can play happily) onto a CD-RW but when I tried to play the CD (on the DVD player) I found they were only audio files.
So, Question is: Is it possible to burn Video Mpegs onto a CD-RW, or can you ONLY use DVD-R/RW for this purpose?
Appreciate the help.
