When I turn on the computer windows cannot open, but the following message pops out:
data error reading drive C
abort, retry, fail?I tried retry/fail, and it both returned the same message: (data error reading drive C
abort, retry, fail?)if I say abort, it quits the message, and the "C:\>" comes out. but I still cannot open windows.
how can I fix the problem?

it was working before, (in fact it worked yesterday until I turned off my computer) and it didn't work when I turned on my computer today.

The Ide cable might have popped out the back of the hard drive. Check the cable and see if it is still connected.

it is about 2inches wide grey with black blocks on either end. with a red strip going down one side.
important!!
if it is not connected make sure that when you connect the ide cable to the harddrive the red strip is facing the power connector on the hard drive
