I'm using MS outlook 97 for email. Can't receive or send email recently and the error message is: "Mapi spooler has shut down unexpectedly. Close all mail enabled application before attemptng to log on again." and is this followed by "The messaging interface has return an unknown error. If problem persists, start Outlook again".
I've checked it out in MS Knowledgebase, the suggested solution is to create a new pst file. have tried but still face the same problem. errors were found when i tried to repair the pst file, but scanpst.exe hung when i click repair. Please help! Thanks!

Hope this isn't too late.
I had the exact same experience as you're describing, whith no luck following MS support instructions.
Here's how I corrected it:

In my web travels, I came upon a piece which linked the problem to incoming mail, not "mail stuck in the outbox" as MS suggests.
I downloaded a different e-mail client (Eudora), and was able to use that to clean out the offending e-mail that resided on my ISP server. Up until then, I couldn't get the corrupted message off my ISP server, which meant it just shut down Outlook every time I tried to receive mail (that's why creating a new .pst file as MS suggests is a waste of time).
By using a different client to view and delete the offending mail, I could get Outlook working again with no problem.
Hope this helps!

I m using Microsoft Outlook. A mail is stuck in Outbox. The mail is not transmitting. also i m not able to delete it from the outbox. when i try to delete it gives the following error : "The Item Could not be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied."
Now when i try to open the mail it fails with the following error :"Can't open this item. The MAPI Spooler has already begun transmitting this message."
The mail is having an attachment which is not very big (around 156K).
Other mails are going out (which are bigger than this mail.)
Pls help
Regards,
Kiran Jain

Kiran, I have had the same problem as you describe, with Outlook 97.

The only way I found to delete the stuck message was this:

-In Tools->Options->Email, untick all "Check for new mail on" ticks
-In Tools->Services->Internet E-mail->Properties->Properties->Connection tick "I connect manually"
-Exit Outlook (forcibly with Task Manager if necessary)
-Reopen outlook, and delete the message *before* checking for new mail.
(Then restore the settings you changed)

Then you can open a new message and try to send that. I seem to get the problem when forwarding messages with attachments- if I save the attachment to disk, then manually attach it to the new message it seems to send ok.

If anyone knows the cause of this (attachment type maybe?) and/or a proper solution please let me know!

Simon

Im using Microsoft Outlook 2000. A mail is stuck in Outbox. Basically same scenario im experiencing right now: Mail from the outbox is not transmitting and could not be deleted, the message i get is: "The Item Could not be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied."
And if i open the email, this is the message i get:"Can't open this item. The MAPI Spooler has already begun transmitting this message."

The mail doesnt even have any attachments at all and it is only a word document! Other emails are transmitting even those with large attachements, it is just so irritating to see an email in your outbox not transmitting.

I think the suggestion of Simon Plummer works only for MS Outlook '97. So if there's anybody using MS Outlook 2000 or anybody familiar with MS Outlook 2000 please help me get rid of this irritating email. Thank you so much.

Response #3 (Simon) just worked for me. I am running OL2K in Corporate/Workgroup mode using Internet Email. If you are in Internet Mail Only mode, you could also try removing the checkmark from the "Include this account when checking or sync'ing email" on the GENERAL tab of the Account.

Enjoy.

One sure way is to input a false SMTP server.
When Outlook tries to send it will try to send, but will not find the server. It will give you an error msg. Once you click OK to the error msg you can delete the outgoing stuck mail. This should work for Outlook2K also.
