i have an Quantum 1.2 hard drive. the beginning part of it has bad sectors which affects my windows 95. so, i have formatted it into 2 partitions. the first partition contains 200mb and the second one contains 1.0gig. i have formatted the second partition with the command "format d: /s ". i wish to install my operating system into the second drive (drive D)instead of drive c because the drive c has bad sectors. but when i start the computer, it does not work, an message appears "press any key to reboot"
how can i solve this problems. please help! thanks in advance.

Hi,
Run FDISK and set your second partition as active. I never try it myself, but it's supposed that it's the active partition of HDD which boot. And if this will not work you can try to enter CMOS Setup and change booting sequence to boot from D: drive first. Some new BIOSes allows to do that.
Good luck, Igor M

Friend of mine:
1. Are you sure all the bad sector will be on your 200 MB partition?
2. Normally bad sectors shouldn't represent any harm to your win95 OS, since a good format operation detect them and avoid any future use. If the number of bad sectors is growing with time, there are serious problems with your hard drive.
3. If you want to verify your disk surface using something better than FDISK and FORMAT programs, try Ranish partition Manager.
4. You must activate your 1GB partition using FDISK or another program if you want to boot form that partition.Good luck.

i am quite sure because when i formatted the first 200mb, this message appears "trying to recover unit....". and this does not happen when i formatted the drive D:. before i partition the drive, i have gone through the norton disk surface test and the bad sector are in the first part.
i have tried install the win95 directly without partition, but my system hang. so, i suppose the problem is the bad sectors.
that is all...
thanks for you guys help!

Try deleting all partitions, then create three new partitions. The first one must be at least 10 Mb. In this one,(C) install system files (Command.com, Io.sys, etc.). This will make disk boot. In a second partition, (D) this partition will have to be long enough to cover and pass all the bad sectors. The third partition (E) is where you will install Windows. So, you boot in C:\ then change to E:\ and install Windows. Hope it works for you, I've done it and worked for me.

Hi,
I need your help because I don't understand what is going on with my computer.
It was working O.K, but one day I could not run it. I have the boot display, I can go to BIOS, and that's it, I can not go to Windows. I tried to recover the system using recover CD, but while I was formating my hard drive, I could not format it till 100 %, the computer stops at different levels of formating (35 %, 61% or 97%) and says me to "insert batch file", or to "insert a diskette for drive C:". I don't know what to do.Maybe it is because my hard drive is big for computer to finish the formating (I have 20 GB). I have to format the hard drive before recovery CD could download all aplications.
Thanks.
