Key Highlights
- Agentic Storefronts enable Shopify merchants to reach ChatGPT users directly
- All payments process through Shopify’s system, maintaining merchant control
- Merchants maintain full ownership of customer relationships and transaction data

- New Agentic subscription tier welcomes brands beyond Shopify’s core platform
Shopify (SHOP) has unveiled a significant integration that allows its merchant base to offer products directly within ChatGPT, marking another step in the company’s AI commerce strategy.
The capability operates through Shopify’s Agentic Storefront system, initially introduced in December. This infrastructure links merchant inventories to artificial intelligence platforms, enabling consumers to find and purchase items within conversational interfaces.
ChatGPT’s audience can now explore offerings from Shopify’s merchant ecosystem, evaluate alternatives, and finalize transactions via an embedded browser. Desktop users experience checkout redirection to the merchant’s dedicated website.
According to Shopify, merchants face zero additional transaction charges beyond regular processing costs. Purchase records appear in merchant dashboards with ChatGPT attribution tags, providing sellers with clear visibility into conversion sources.
The platform emphasizes that payment handling bypasses ChatGPT’s native Instant Checkout system. Every transaction routes through Shopify’s checkout and payment architecture, preserving merchants’ status as the official merchant of record.
Data Ownership Remains with Merchants
This architectural choice carries significant implications. Sellers maintain complete control over customer connections and information, regardless of whether purchases originate within ChatGPT exchanges.
“Shopping in ChatGPT begins with discovery,” said Neel Ajjarapu, Commerce Product Lead at OpenAI. “By integrating products from Shopify’s entire merchant ecosystem, we’re making millions of merchants and billions of products instantly more discoverable.”
Mani Fazeli, VP of Product at Shopify, described the development as part of a long-term strategy. “Agentic commerce isn’t something we’re reacting to; it’s a vision we’re bringing to life at the very frontier of commerce and AI.”
The ChatGPT connection joins existing integrations with Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Mode and Gemini app. Shopify reports that thousands of merchants already conduct sales through Copilot.
Agentic Plan Welcomes Brands Outside Shopify’s Ecosystem
Shopify has simultaneously launched its Agentic plan as a publicly available subscription tier designed for companies operating outside Shopify’s primary e-commerce infrastructure.
This subscription model allows brands to populate Shopify Catalog with their product lines and establish shoppable presence across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini app, and Shop App—all while maintaining their existing e-commerce technology stack.
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open framework developed in partnership with Google, powers the Google-related integrations. Major retailers and payment networks including Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa have endorsed the standard.
Fenty Beauty represents one of the brands already leveraging the system. “Shopify puts Fenty Beauty in the conversations shoppers are already having,” said Sapna Shah Parikh, SVP Global Marketing at Fenty Beauty Brands at Kendo.
Shop Pay integration with Microsoft Copilot is scheduled for future release, enabling consumers to finalize purchases without leaving the Copilot environment.
Shopify indicates that product information updates instantly across all AI distribution channels, eliminating requirements for multiple applications or disconnected inventory feeds.
